With C.J. Gardner-Johnson suspended, Buffalo promotes Te’Cory Couch and veteran Geno Stone to neutralize Lamar Jackson and a high-powered Ravens offense in a critical AFC showdown.
The Buffalo Bills are adding depth to their secondary ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Baltimore Ravens, signing one defensive back to the active roster and elevating two others from the practice squad.
Buffalo announced Saturday that it signed defensive back Te’Cory Couch to the active roster while elevating safety Geno Stone and cornerback A.J. Woods for the Week 8 matchup at Highmark Stadium.
The moves come as the Bills prepare to face a Baltimore offense that will see quarterback Lamar Jackson returning from injury. Buffalo will also be without safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, who is suspended for Sunday's game.
Couch has appeared in two games for the Bills this season, both after being elevated from the practice squad. Him being signed was necessary to make him eligible to play. The defensive back now joins the active roster after spending time with Buffalo's practice squad in each of the past three seasons.
Couch originally joined the Bills as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Miami in 2024. He has worked to earn opportunities in Buffalo's secondary and will provide additional depth as the team prepares for a challenging matchup against Baltimore.
Stone is also being elevated for the first time this season. The veteran safety signed with Buffalo during the offseason but did not make the initial 53-man roster, landing on the practice squad after final cuts.
The 26-year-old has plenty of NFL experience, appearing in 85 regular-season games since entering the league in 2020. Stone previously played for both the Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals, giving him familiarity with Baltimore's organization and some of the players he could face Sunday.
Stone's elevation is particularly notable with Gardner-Johnson unavailable. His experience could prove valuable as Buffalo works to account for Jackson and the Ravens' playmakers.
Woods rounds out the trio of moves. The Bills signed the cornerback back to their practice squad earlier this week, marking his second stint with the organization this season. He was previously with Buffalo before being let go, and the team has now brought him back into the fold.
With the Ravens in town, Buffalo is giving itself additional options in the defensive backfield. And with the aforementioned Jackson returning, they're going to need all the help they can get. The Bills enter the matchup at 5-1, while Baltimore arrives at 4-3.
The Bills will look to maintain their strong start to the season while dealing with the challenge of containing one of the league's most dynamic offenses.
The Bills and Ravens kick off at 1pm on Sunday. The game will air on CBS with Ian Eagle and Ross Tucker on the call.
