The All-Pro cornerback reportedly rejected multiple offers to rejoin a struggling secondary, aiming to bolster a defense surrendering the league's second-most passing yards during his much-anticipated homecoming.
The Buffalo Bills are bringing back a familiar face. ESPN's Adam Schefter was the first to report that the Bills are signing cornerback Tre'Davious White to the team's practice squad.
According to Schefter, the Bills are expected to get White acclimated to the new system before ultimately adding him to the active roster. It was added that White "turned down several opportunities" in order to return to Buffalo.
White, a first-round pick in 2017, has spent most of his career in Buffalo.
From 2017 to 2023, he was Buffalo's number one corner. In 2024, he split time with the Los Angeles Rams and Baltimore Ravens before returning to Buffalo last season. In 2025, he played in 16 regular-season games and two playoff games.
During his first run with the Bills, White was a two-time Pro Bowl selection, a first-team All-Pro in 2019 and a second-team All-Pro in 2020. And for those who view this move as a surprise, Bills general manager Brandon Beane alluded to the possibility of it as far back as April.
"You would never close the door on bringing a guy like Tre back here to Buffalo," Beane said at the time.
White rejoins a Bills team that has struggled on the defensive side of the ball, especially in the secondary. The team is giving up the third-most completions per game (26.2), the second-most passing yards per game (285.8 yards), nearly 11 yards per completion, and the second-most passing first downs per game (15.8).
At 31 years old, there are questions as to how impactful and helpful White could be for the defense. While the plan is to bring him to the 53-man roster, that's no guarantee, depending on how he does when he gets on the field under Jim Leonhard's new system.
Last year, Pro Football Focus had him as the 52nd-rated cornerback out of 114 eligible players.
For his career, White has 373 combined tackles, 18 tackles for loss, five forced fumbles, 83 passes defended, and 19 interceptions. That said, he hasn't had more than one interception in a season since having three in 2020. In fact, 12 of his 19 interceptions came in his first three seasons.
White will get his first chance on the field with the team when they return to prepare for the Baltimore Ravens on Wednesday, November 4. Will he play that week? It's unlikely, but it seems as though the plan is to get him on the field for the toughest stretch of the Bills schedule as they try to hold off the New England Patriots.
The Bills are currently on their Bye Week with a 5-1 record after beating the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. That record is good enough for first place in the AFC East.
