The Bufalo Bills and Joe Brady have made their first major hire for the new coaching staff, bringing in a long-time offensive coordinator for the same role in Buffalo.

Joe Brady has been Buffalo Bills head coach for just a day, and he's already made his first big hiring move.

According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the Bills are set to hire Pete Carmichael Jr. as their offensive coordinator.

"The first big hire for Bills coach Joe Brady: Buffalo has agreed to terms with Pete Carmichael Jr. to be their offensive coordinator, per The Insiders," Rapoport posted.

Carmichael Jr. joins the Bills after spending the last two seasons with Sean Payton in Denver as a senior offensive assistant. Prior to his time in Denver, Carmichael spent years in New Orleans with Payton and then Dennis Allen.

Carmichael Jr. also worked with Brady in New Orleans in 2017 and 2018 when Brady was an offensive assistant.

Carmichael Jr. started his NFL career in 2000 as a tight ends coach for the Cleveland Browns. Through the years he worked with Washington and San Diego before joining the Saints in 2006.

He started as a quarterbacks coach in New Orleans for three seasons before being promoted to offensive coordinator. He held that position for 15 years.

In those 15 years, Carmichael Jr. helped run Payton's offense. On four occasions, Carmichael Jr.'s offense ranked first in yards. It finished in the top five in points eight different times.

With the offensive coordinator position filled, eyes now move to what Brady and the Bills plan to do on the defensive side of the ball. Reports suggest Broncos assistant Jim Leonhard is a leading candidate for the position. However, there are rumors circulating that Buffalo is interested in both Raheem Morris and Jim Schwartz as well for the role.

Aside from the main coordinator roles, it's also been reported that Buffalo is hiring Pat Meyer has its offensive line coach. Meyer replaces Aaron Kromer, who retired at the end of the 2025 season.
