As the Bills prepare for Baltimore, Joe Brady reveals the disruptive defensive tackle serves as the unit’s blueprint, promising a transformed identity for the season's second half.

The Buffalo Bills are hoping the return of Ed Oliver can help their defense find its identity coming out of the bye week, and head coach Joe Brady made it clear just how important the defensive tackle is to the team's plans.

Oliver has appeared in only half of Buffalo's games this season, leaving the defense without one of its most important pieces for an extended stretch. While the defensive line has found ways to keep things moving in his absence, Brady believes Oliver's return can make a significant difference as the Bills prepare for the second half of the season.

“When we put together the vision for this defense, it was around Ed,” Brady said on Wednesday.

Oliver was expected to be a major part of Buffalo's defensive plans, making his absence particularly difficult as the team works to establish consistency on that side of the ball. The Bills have continued to try to move forward without him, but getting Oliver back would give defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard another key piece to work with.

Brady said Oliver would be on the field for practice as the Bills began to prepare for the Baltimore Ravens this weekend. The team planned to see how he progressed before determining what his return would look like.

Oliver practiced and was officially listed as a limited participant when the injury report came out.

The Bills have received contributions from other defensive linemen while Oliver has been sidelined. Brady specifically pointed to the group's performance and the versatility of players such as defensive lineman DeWayne Carter and Deone Walker, who can help the team move pieces around and fill different roles.

“Our defensive line has stepped up. They're playing really good football,” Brady said.

Still, Brady emphasized that Oliver brings something the Bills cannot simply replace by rotating other players into his spot.

“There's a reason Ed Oliver is who Ed Oliver is,” Brady said. “Getting him out there and being able to play football again is only going to help our defense and our identity.”

That identity will be put to the test against the Ravens, who present a difficult challenge with their combination of running and passing threats. Lamar Jackson's likely return from an ankle injury would add another layer to the matchup alongside Derrick Henry, giving Buffalo little room for error defensively.

The Bills have spent the bye week evaluating their performance and identifying ways to improve. Brady said the goal is to clean up the issues that have shown up on tape without losing the qualities that have helped the team win.

Getting Oliver back into the lineup would be a significant step toward that goal. The immediate question is whether he can stay healthy and build momentum over the remainder of the season. If he can, Buffalo will have a better chance of seeing the defensive vision Brady described take shape on the field.
