The Bills made several defensive additions this offseason, but Ed Oliver may be the player who determines how far the unit can go.
The Buffalo Bills spent much of the offseason focused on improving their defense.
They added Bradley Chubb to bolster the pass rush. They brought in new faces for the secondary and entered minicamp season believing they have the pieces to field one of the better defenses in the AFC.
But for all the attention paid to the newcomers, the player who may ultimately determine how far this defense goes is someone who's been on the roster for years: Ed Oliver.
It's easy to forget just how well Oliver was playing before injuries slowed him down last season.
For a stretch, he looked like one of the most disruptive defensive tackles in football. He was creating pressure, making plays behind the line of scrimmage, and impacting games in ways that don't always show up in the box score.
Then came the injuries.
By season's end, the conversation surrounding Buffalo's defense had shifted elsewhere. Questions about the pass rush, the secondary, and other offseason additions took center stage.
Now, Oliver enters 2026 as one of the most important players on the roster. And it's because the team needs more than just edge pressure.
Greg Rousseau will draw attention, and Chubb should help create more opportunities across the defensive front. But the defenses that consistently give offenses problems are often the ones that generate disruption from the middle.
That's where Oliver can make a difference.
When a defensive tackle or traditional end is winning at the line of scrimmage, everything changes. Running lanes disappear faster, quarterbacks have less room to step up in the pocket, and edge rushers find themselves in more favorable situations. It's a situation where the entire defense benefits.
That's why it's not hard to envision a scenario where Oliver becomes one of the biggest reasons Buffalo fields a top defense this season. He's shown glimpses of having figured it out. And now, in a new defense under Jim Leonhard, the opportunity has never been greater.
The question now is whether Oliver can put together that level of play over the course of a full season. If he does, Buffalo's defense could be much better than many people expect.
