Every offseason has that one idea that refuses to die. For the Buffalo Bills, this year’s idea is Las Vegas Raiders star Maxx Crosby.
No, there’s no report saying a trade is imminent, and there's nothing to even suggest a deal is on the table. And, of course, it could be a difficult trade to pull off depending on the pieces going back. But the conversation around Crosby and the Bills keeps popping back up, and it’s worth unpacking why.
First, the obvious. Crosby is one of the best defensive players in football. He’s disruptive, relentless, and exactly the kind of edge rusher every contender dreams of adding. The Bills don’t have that type of game-wrecker right now, and it’s been a missing piece for years.
When you line that reality up with a team that’s trying to maximize its Super Bowl window, it’s easy to see why fans and analysts start connecting dots.
That’s especially true when you look at where the Bills are as an organization. They’re not rebuilding, nor are they really resetting. They’re firmly in a win-now window built around Josh Allen. When you’re in that position, you start thinking less about “good enough” moves and more about swings that can change how teams game plan against you.
Crosby would do that immediately.
At the same time, this is where reality checks in. The Raiders aren’t exactly in a position where they need to move a cornerstone player. Crosby isn’t aging out, he’s not on an expiring deal that forces their hand, and he’s the type of player teams build around, not trade away.
If the Raiders ever did entertain moving him, the asking price would be massive.
That’s where skepticism is justified.
The Bills are already tight against the cap, and Crosby comes with a $35 million cap hit this year. They also don’t have unlimited draft capital to throw around. Trading for a player like Crosby wouldn’t just cost picks, it would reshape how the roster is built for years. That’s a heavy commitment, especially for a team that still has other areas to address.
So why does this idea keep coming back? Because it makes sense.
The Bills need pressure without blitzing. They need someone offenses have to account for on every snap, and a defender who can change games the way Allen does on offense. Crosby checks every one of those boxes, which makes him the perfect “what if” player for a fan base that’s tired of being close.
There’s also a broader truth here. This conversation says less about Crosby and more about where the Bills are perceived to be. People don’t float blockbuster ideas for teams they think are stuck. They do it for teams they believe are one or two moves away.
That doesn’t mean the Bills should make a reckless trade that could set them back years. But if you’re trying to imagine the most dramatic way Buffalo could tilt the balance in the AFC, it’s hard not to land on a name like Crosby. Even if it never goes beyond that. make a reckless trade. But if you’re trying to imagine the m
