Joe Brady Explains Why Bills Brought Back Tre'Davious White

Buffalo’s offensive coordinator details how the veteran cornerback’s familiarity and leadership could stabilize a depleted secondary as the Bills push for defensive consistency heading into the postseason.

During the Bye Week, the Buffalo Bills decided to add a familiar face to their secondary as they look to find answers for a struggling unit. Buffalo brought back cornerback Tre'Davious White to the team's practice squad, and head coach Joe Brady explained on Wednesday why the team felt it was the right move to make.

The Bills have dealt with injuries and inconsistent play in the secondary this season, creating a need for additional depth as they prepare for the second half of the season. While White isn't guaranteed a spot on the active roster, Brady believes the veteran can provide value both on the field and in the locker room.

"Tre played really good football last year," Brady said Wednesday. "And, you know, we've been obviously battling some injuries in the secondary and kind of going through some things."

Brady compared White's situation to that of linebacker Shaq Thompson, describing both as experienced players who will need to work their way back into a position to contribute. The Bills are bringing in veterans who understand the organization, what they are looking for, and who could help stabilize a defense that has struggled to consistently make stops.

"There might be an opportunity for him to come up," Brady said. "And we know the value that he brings, the experience and the opportunity."

That opportunity, however, is far from guaranteed. Brady made it clear that White understands what he's returning to Buffalo to do and that the cornerback will need to prove he's ready if a chance to play opens up.

Brady added that there are no expectations with White back in the mix.

That said, Buffalo has had to navigate changes in its secondary, and having a veteran who has played in the league for a decade and understands the organization could be useful as the team works through those challenges.

Brady also pointed to the special teams role White may need to embrace as he works toward a potential opportunity. It was emphasized that the veteran understands what is expected of him and that he can be a positive voice for younger players in the room.

But Brady says he has to make sure he gets himself ready for game action because, as he said, "it's a long season".

For now, the Bills will see how White progresses in practice before determining whether he can contribute on game day. It may not be long before number 27 suits up in the red, white, and blue once again.
