The Denver Broncos are trying to straighten out Bo Nix, but Davis Webb thinks a turnaround could be at hand.
The Denver Broncos are trying to fix Bo Nix, and everyone has theories about the Broncos’ struggling quarterback. Offensive coordinator Davis Webb knows Nix as well as anyone, and he thinks Nix is “ready to go on a little run,” according a writeup from Sam Jane of the Denver Post.
The comp Jane used for this was quarterback Trevor Lawrence of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Lawrence was awful during the first nine games of last season, as Jane noted that averaged 222 passing yards per game and threw just 10 touchdowns against seven interceptions.
The natives were getting restless in Jacksonville, especially given Lawrence’s status as a first-round pick and the team’s playoff aspirations. Both of those things are also true of the Broncos, but Lawrence was able to turns his season around.
His last games were phenomenal. Lawrence threw 19 touchdowns compared to five interceptions, and he led the Jaguars to an NFL-best 33.6 points per game. Jacksonville won eight straight games and the AFC South before losing a narrow playoff game to the Buffalo Bills.
If you pull back the curtain all the way, though, the argument starts to falter a little. The Jags made a key trade with the Las Vegas Raiders to acquire slot receiver Jakobi Meyers, who gave Lawrence a sure-handed target as the rest of the Jacksonville receiving corps was struggling with drops.
No matter. That’s also been a Denver issue, but not nearly to the same extent. Nix’s problem has been Nix — he looks tentative and timid, and he can barely get out of his way half the time, much less make plays.
Where Webb’s argument is more valid, though, is about the opponent. The Broncos are playing the Arizona Cardinals, who came into their game against the Los Angeles Rams with a struggling defense. They stiffened up against LA, but if Arizona plays to the mean it should be a lot easier for Nix to move the ball and score points.
The Chargers game also provides a bit of a blueprint here for Denver. The Broncos defense was able to give Nix a short field via turnovers and a poor coaching decision from Jim Harbaugh, and the result was an unimpressive win that was nonetheless a win.
Webb says Nix is in a “good spot,” so we’ll see. If there’s one thing we learned in the tale of two halves that we saw in the Seattle game, it’s that there’s no predicting what Bo Nix is going to do right now.
