The Denver Broncos have a surprising number of questions in training camp considering the team's success last year.
The Denver Broncos are opening training camp next week with the rookies already in the fold, and this camp is expected to be surprisingly eventful for a 14-3 team that made a deep playoff run all the way to the AFC championship game.
There are questions all over the field, but most of the big ones are on offense, according to Jeff Legwold of ESPN, which did yet another camp preview today. Legwold’s questions are about whether the offense is “championship worthy,” and that storyline also contains multiple questions about some changes the Broncos will be making.
One change they don’t want to make is about quarterback Bo Nix, however. Nix broke his ankle in Denver’s divisional-round win against the Buffalo Bills, and initially there was some decidedly mixed messaging about his medicals and clearance for a full return.
The Broncos have since gotten on the same page with the information part of this, but we still haven’t seen Nix on the field in action yet. Presumably, that will happen some time in the next few weeks, but it’s the big story to watch as veterans report on July 28.
That’s not the only question, however. The Broncos have a new offensive coordinator in Davis Webb, and that’s the big change. Webb will supposedly be calling plays, and he’ll also be tasked with getting the running game going and utilizing the explosive talents of new wide receiver Jaylen Waddle.
That’s a lot, and it needs to happen quickly because the Broncos have a brutal early schedule that will test them right away. Some of the forecasts have the Broncos dropping a couple of wins this season, but they could actually be a better team despite that if the offense comes together.
There are questions within a couple of position groups as well. The Broncos decided not to make any big changes at running back, and instead they’ve elected to bring back injury-prone J.K. Dobbins, who swears he’ll be able to stay healthy and have a big year. The Broncos did draft running back Jonah Coleman to run between the tackles, so he’s another name to watch in training camp.
The receiver group is yet another storyline. There’s plenty of talent there, but that could be problematic as the likes of Troy Franklin, Pat Bryant and Marvin Mims Jr. compete for snaps and targets. There are lesser issues on defense, but the offense will get most of the headlines in August.
