Sitting atop the AFC North after a gritty divisional victory, Cleveland’s relentless defense is silencing skeptics and proving this resilient roster is no longer a league doormat.
The Cleveland Browns are quietly putting together an impressive resume, going to 4-2 after a 13-10 win over the Baltimore Ravens.
Sunday's win over the Ravens wasn't always pretty, but the Browns’ defense took advantage of a Derrick Henry fumble in the fourth quarter to eventually overcome a Baltimore team that was without quarterback Lamar Jackson.
In the end, all that will matter at the end of the season is that Cleveland put another number in the win column. The Browns have earned wins over two AFC North opponents in two tries, the Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Ravens, Steelers, and Browns have a 4-2 record, but Cleveland is atop the AFC North thanks to wins over Baltimore and Pittsburgh.
When speaking to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, Browns linebacker Quincy Williams made a declaration about where Cleveland is at this season, saying, "We ain't the same old Browns anymore."
The Browns wanted to prove that before the season. Through the first six weeks, Cleveland is proving to be a new team under first-year head coach Todd Monken.
Williams has been impressed by how the young players on the Browns are taking ownership of their positions, playing like vets on one of the better defenses in the league despite trading away Myles Garrett and the firing and losing defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz.
The Browns brought that kind of attitude to Sunday's game against the Ravens. Williams said the Browns were not about to let the Ravens come into Cleveland and take the No. 1 spot in the AFC North.
After a 34-10 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, former Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin took a shot at the Browns, suggesting the Browns would Brown. Cleveland didn't blink, winning its next three games.
The Browns are set to travel to play a 1-5 Tennessee Titans team that found their first win of the season over the Indianapolis Colts. For Cleveland, it's another opportunity to stay atop the AFC North before traveling to play Pittsburgh on Nov. 1. The Saints will wait to host Cleveland on Nov. 8.
Those are now seen as very winnable games for this bunch. And while the Ravens are expected to be more formidable when Jackson returns, the Browns are very much in the playoff picture, and they're gaining confidence along the way.
With the trade deadline coming up on Nov. 10, maybe the Browns will think about being buyers to make a playoff push.
