With Jalen Hurts sidelined by a serious blood clot, Philadelphia’s playoff hopes hinge on a bold move for Cleveland’s rising backup as the trade deadline looms.
Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders hired an agent for the first time in his NFL, appearing to increase the likelihood he could be dealt before the Nov. 10 deadline.
Veteran quarterback Deshaun Watson won the quarterback battle with Sanders in training camp, and the former Clemson star has led the Browns to a 3-2 record early in the season. Based on his performance so far in the season, Cleveland is expected to ride with Watson, though it isn't clear if any of the quarterbacks on the roster will start for head coach Todd Monken next season.
When Dillon Gabriel returns from injured reserve, it would make sense for the Browns to try and trade one of their quarterbacks. Sanders, the QB2 for Cleveland, would probably fetch a higher price at the trade deadline than Gabriel or Taylor Green.
But would there be any suitors for the Browns?
Well, one team is in desperate need of quarterback help after concerning injury news on Thursday. The Philadelphia Eagles are set to start Tanner McKee in their contest against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday after the team announced Jalen Hurts is out with a superficial blood clot in his calf.
Due to the severity of the injury, it's unclear whether Hurts will return to play again this season. The Eagles released Andy Dalton on Friday in a move to keep Lane Johnson on the 53-man roster for cap purposes even though the offensive lineman retired last week.
Dalton has reportedly received offers from other NFL teams for his services, and he might not want to rejoin the Eagles after his costly interception against the Chicago Bears on "Monday Night Football" in Week 3 put a sour taste in his and the team's mouth.
There aren't a ton of great quarterback options for the Eagles at this point in the season.
The 2-3 Eagles might take a chance on Sanders to try and keep their season alive, though it would take a heroic effort by Philadelphia to remain in the playoff race with Hurts out and a plethora of injuries on its roster. But Sanders could be an interesting trade for the Eagles, who could give the team a long-term option at backup quarterback for the next few seasons.
Maybe Sanders would play better in offensive coordinator Sean Mannion's offense, and could put up some good tape in Philadelphia as he tries to become a starter in the league for some team.
