Browns Make Major Contract Decision on Safety Grant Delpit

The Cleveland Browns are signing safety Grant Delpit to a three-year extension worth $16 million annually with $35 million guaranteed.

Delpit has been a key piece for the Browns' defense over his five seasons in the league and is now tied to the franchise through the 2029 season.

The 27-year-old is coming off a strong season for Cleveland, as he finished with 89 total tackles, four tackles for loss, three sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, four pass deflections, and an interception.

The Browns have made major changes to their defense this offseason, sending reigning Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for Jared Verse and draft capital. 

Cleveland also has a new coaching regime coming in, as they hired Todd Monken as head coach and Mike Rutenberg as defensive coordinator. 

Jim Schwartz had been the architect of the Browns' defense over the past few seasons, but he resigned as defensive coordinator after being passed over for the head coaching job.

With the new defensive system and Garrett traded away, it was important for Cleveland to maintain some continuity. They have done that with the extensions of Delpit and cornerback Denzel Ward in recent days, keeping their secondary together. 

Ward inked a two-year $62.2 million deal with $52.3 million guaranteed to stay with the Browns, making him the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history.

Despite the change in coordinator and loss of Garrett, the Browns still have one of the most talented defenses in the NFL. Verse is a talented young pass rusher who won't replace Garrett's production, but will be a valuable player off the edge.

In the 2025 season, Verse played well for the Rams, finishing with 58 total tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, and a pass deflection. He has been named a Pro Bowler in each of his first two seasons.

While there is change, the Browns' front office is keeping core pieces in Delpit and Ward in place long-term to help Monken usher in a new era in Cleveland.
