With the 2025 NFL Playoffs in full swing, the Cleveland Browns and general manager Andrew Berry will begin to focus on rebuilding the roster for the 2026 NFL regular season.
First and foremost, the Browns’ top priority this offseason will be to find a new head coach after parting ways with Kevin Stefanski. And with the organization’s projected top-two favorites being offensive-minded coaches (Jaguars’ offensive coordinator Grant Udinski and Mike McDaniel), it’s clear that the front office must revamp the entire offense.
Cleveland’s offense was one of the worst in the NFL during the 2025 season, ranking 30th in yards per game at 262.1 yards per game. Part of this issue was due to the poor quarterback play throughout the year, as the Browns finished 31st in passing yards per game at 165.2 yards per game.
Obviously, the offensive line play last season was abysmal, but both rookie quarterbacks, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders, did not prove themselves to be potential franchise quarterbacks for the struggling franchise. To make matters worse, Cleveland’s 5-12 record put them out of reach for a quarterback in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Now, Berry and the rest of the front office will have to reconsider the organization’s quarterback room ahead of the 2026 season. Luckily, New Orleans Saints quarterback Spencer Rattler could be viewed as a potential trade piece for the Browns this offseason.
Rattler, a former highly-touted high school prospect, was widely considered to be a future franchise quarterback at the professional level. However, this took a dramatic change after his former college coach, Lincoln Riley, benched him in favor of Caleb Williams during the Oklahoma Sooners’ 2021 season.
This forced Rattler to enter the transfer portal, and he would ultimately spend his last two seasons with the South Carolina Gamecocks. In his final two seasons at the college level, the young playmaker threw for over 6,000 yards and 37 touchdowns, paving the way to be selected in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft by the Saints.
It would not take long for Rattler to see the field, as he would play in seven games as a rookie. He would go on to end his first NFL season with 1,317 passing yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions. Rattler showed flashes of potential in 2024, but with New Orleans hiring Kellen Moore to become the next head coach, the Saints ended up selecting Tyler Shough in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
Despite Shough’s arrival in the quarterback room, Rattler still managed to win the starting job. In his nine games played as the starting quarterback, the 25-year-old threw for 1,586 yards and eight touchdowns, but was benched in favor of Shough.
With Shough seemingly becoming the next franchise quarterback for the Saints, this gives Cleveland a perfect opportunity to take a gamble on Rattler. Since he was a fifth-round pick, the asking price for Rattler will likely be a day-three pick.
If the Browns fail to sign a veteran quarterback in free agency this offseason, such as Malik Willis, taking a flyer on Rattler makes perfect sense for a team that is desperate for consistent quarterback play next season.
