Jake Browning’s role faces a threat after Jalon Daniels’ terrific performance forces Todd Bowles to declare an "open competition" for the QB2 job.
Ever since he signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, it was assumed that Jake Browning's role as Baker Mayfield's primary backup was etched in stone.
However, the recent string of events concerning Tampa's quarterbacks has taken a sledgehammer to that assumption.
Browning suffered a back injury in practice early last week, forcing him to sit out the team's first preseason game against the New York Jets. In his absence, undrafted rookie QB Jalon Daniels, who played the second half, put on a spectacular show, leading the Bucs on two touchdown drives and securing a Tampa victory.
Though Daniels' performance likely resulted in his leapfrogging Connor Bazelak, who played the first half, on the depth chart, it was still assumed that Browning was QB2 and Daniels would have to convince the Bucs to keep a third QB in order to make the team.
Daniels has played well throughout camp, and it was becoming more likely that the Bucs would not want to risk losing him on waivers if they cut him and tried to sneak him onto their practice squad.
However, it turns out QB3 may not be Daniels' ceiling this season, with head coach Todd Bowles declaring the battle for the QB2 job an "open competition."
Browning's Response
For his part, Browning handled the news of his job being up for grabs exactly the way one would expect and hope a professional would.
As shared by Pewter Report, Browning welcomed the competition, saying that this is what you sign up for in the NFL. He added that he is confident in his own play.
"I think anytime you're in the NFL and if you think you're above any competition, you're in the wrong business. I welcome any competition, and feel pretty confident that I've been playing really well this camp...JD played well, and Baze is a really good player, too. We've got a really good room. I'm not shying away from any competition. Bring it."
That is the perfect response from Browning, who understands that nothing is handed to a player in the NFL, and he will have to prove himself to win the QB2 job.
Bowles recently announced that Mayfield and the rest of the healthy starters will play in Tampa's next preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday.
Browning will also be getting his first taste of preseason in Saturday's game, which just became a lot more interesting for all of Tampa's quarterbacks.
Final Thoughts
Now we're talking. The battle to be Mayfield's backup has now become one of the Bucs' most interesting storylines for the remainder of the preseason, especially with the team and Vita Vea finally agreeing to a contract extension, ending their standoff, which had been ongoing for two months.
I still believe Browning's experience gives him a significant edge in the competition for QB2. It will be hard for an undrafted rookie with only one preseason game of experience to unseat a QB like Browning, who has years of experience and has started 10 games in his career.
Bowles' announcement bodes well for Daniels' chances of making the team. If he has made a big enough impression on his coaches to contend for the QB2 job, he has likely made a big enough impression on them to earn a spot on the 53-man roster.
Browning and Daniels will each get their chance to pull ahead in the competition Saturday night against the Chiefs.
