Jalon Daniels talked about getting to meet and swap jerseys with his idol, Aaron Rodgers.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ backup quarterback Jalon Daniels has been living a fairy tale these past few months.
Not only did he fulfill a lifelong dream of making it to the NFL, but he also became one of the league’s best stories this offseason.
After joining the Bucs as an undrafted rookie free agent, Daniels skyrocketed up the depth chart, starting training camp as the team’s QB4 and hoping to make enough of an impression to earn a practice squad spot.
Within just a couple of weeks, Daniels surpassed both Connor Bazelak and Jake Browning, earning the job as Baker Mayfield’s backup.
After only three games, Daniels was an NFL starting quarterback. A dislocated thumb suffered by Mayfield late in Week 3 thrust Daniels into the starting lineup for the next three games.
Daniels was shaky in his first NFL start, but didn’t look out of place. In Week 5, a primetime Thursday Night Football contest on the road against the Dallas Cowboys, Daniels was terrific. His first career win was also Tampa’s first win of 2026 and gave life to the Bucs’ season from hell.
Unfortunately, Daniels couldn’t continue working his magic in Week 6. He threw two brutal fourth-quarter interceptions, and Tampa blew a 16-3 lead, losing 26-19 in overtime to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
While the loss dropped the Bucs to 1-5 and made Daniels look like an undrafted rookie for the first time, it also gave the 23-year-old yet another moment he will remember forever.
He got to meet his idol, Steelers’ quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Not only did he get to meet Rodgers, but Daniels also got to swap jerseys with the 42-year-old future Hall of Famer, a touching moment that was captured on camera.
Daniels spoke about the experience with ESPN’s Jenna Laine.
Shocked Rodgers Wanted His Jersey
Daniels approached Rodgers as a fan, but the esteemed veteran embraced him as a colleague.
While Rodgers graciously offered the rookie his jersey before he could even ask, it was what happened next that shocked Daniels.
Rodgers wanted his jersey, too.
Daniels relived the moment with Laine.
"I mean, it was kind of crazy. So, just kind of ... without trying to completely ask that -- I don't want to be that guy -- and he was just like, 'I know exactly what you're getting at. I'll give you the jersey.' And then I'm like, 'All right man, thank you.'"
Then came the surprise.
"[I] was about to walk away and he was like, 'Wait, hold on. Can I get yours?' Now, that's kind of what caught me by surprise."
Rodgers, whose sentimental side rarely shines through on game days, appreciated the respect he was shown by Daniels and revealed that he is a fan of the rookie as well and is excited to see what Daniels can become in the future.
"I appreciate the respect," Rodgers said of Daniels on the CBS broadcast. "Super respectful guy. I like his game. I like the way he throws it. Obviously, super talented with his feet. I'm excited to see how he develops. Learning behind a guy who's played a long time like Baker is obviously going to be great for him."
Final Thoughts
It was a great moment for Daniels. It's too bad it had to come in a devastating loss for the Bucs. Although one has to wonder whether Rodgers would have been as accommodating if he were the one who had just suffered a disappointing loss.
Rodgers is right to be excited about Daniels' future. He has the talent to one day become a solid NFL starter.
It is hard to believe that Daniels went undrafted. The Bucs certainly got a steal that will help the team well into the future.
