What a difference a couple of weeks can make.

When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers opened their preseason against the New York Jets only two weeks ago, undrafted rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels was repping as the team's QB4. Daniels flashed his talent throughout the offseason and created a decent amount of buzz, but was still an extreme long shot to make the team. He was young and had upside, making him the exact type of quarterback teams love to stash on their practice squad as they develop.

A few days before the Jets game, Jake Browning, who was signed by the Bucs this offseason to be Baker Mayfield's backup, suffered a minor back injury in practice. Tampa decided to err on the side of caution and held Browning out of the game.

With Mayfield resting along with the rest of the starters, both Daniels and Connor Bazelak, who went into the game as QB3, had a golden opportunity to make a statement.

Bazelak started and played the first half, but was unable to get much going with the offense. However, when Daniels came in for the second half, things changed. He led the Bucs on a pair of touchdown drives, making plays with both his arm and his legs. Daniels provided the spark Tampa needed for a comeback victory. Even though he is only a rookie, Daniels played with the poise of a seasoned veteran.

Just like that, Daniels was now QB3.

Moving up a spot on the depth chart is an impressive accomplishment for any rookie, let alone an undrafted one. Unfortunately, most teams don't carry three QBs on their 53-man roster nowadays. With Browning seemingly entrenched as the backup, Daniels' only path to the roster was to convince the Bucs to keep a third quarterback.

But, Daniels wasn't done climbing up the depth chart.

Head coach Todd Bowles publicly announced that the battle for the QB2 job was now an "open competition."

With Browning back for Tampa's second preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs, he had a chance to separate himself from Daniels and hold onto his spot.

That is not what happened.

Browning played well against the Chiefs and even showed some toughness by returning after getting leveled on a sack that forced him out of the game. Unfortunately for Browning, he couldn't lead the Bucs to any points while running the offense.

Once again, the offense was a different animal once Daniels took over. He again led Tampa on two second-half TD drives, plus another that ended in a field goal, and turned the 9-0 deficit he inherited into a 16-15 victory.

With consecutive impressive preseason games under his belt, and tape that all 31 other teams can watch, Daniels looked to be forcing the Bucs to keep him or risk losing him on waivers. 

Now, the biggest question about Daniels had changed from whether he could make the team to whether he has surpassed Browning to be QB2.

When Browning came to the Bucs, it looked like his role as Mayfield's backup was set in stone. He spent years backing up Joe Burrow in Cincinnati, proving himself to be a trustworthy QB2, and has even started 10 games in his career.

Now, it looks like Browning may have been passed by Daniels to be Tampa's QB2. 

If you asked a Magic 8 Ball if Daniels is QB2, it would likely read "all signs point to yes."

The Bucs have only one preseason game remaining against the Jacksonville Jaguars Friday night. With Mayfield not playing, all eyes will be on Tampa's quarterbacks. When asked who would start at QB, Bowles said he still hadn't decided.

Not a great sign if you're Browning.

According to Greg Auman, Daniels also received the majority of the QB2 reps in practice on Wednesday.

It certainly looks as though Daniels has overtaken Browning. At the very least, if Daniels has another impressive showing against Jacksonville, the QB2 job will be his.

It has been a meteoric rise for Daniels. Going from an undrafted rookie/roster longshot to QB2 seemed unthinkable at the beginning of training camp.

What Daniels has accomplished over the last two weeks is nothing short of remarkable.

If he is indeed the Bucs QB2, it will be interesting to see what Tampa does with Browning. While keeping him would be preferable due to his experience and reputation as one of the league's better backups, another team looking to upgrade its backup QB spot (Detroit Lions?) may offer the Bucs a draft pick for Browning.

Friday's game against the Jaguars will be the last round in Tampa's QB2 competition, if it isn't already over. One more solid showing from Daniels may guarantee that he enters the season as Mayfield's primary backup.

He has certainly earned it. Daniels started the offseason at the bottom of the depth chart and has done everything he could to work his way up.
