New Buffalo Bills head coach Joe Brady didn’t wait long at all before making his first big hire, he and Bills quarterback Josh Allen are in “lockstep” on what they were looking for in the hire, according to ESPN. Buffalo is set to bring on Pete Carmichael as their offensive coordinator, who Brady worked with in the past on the New Orleans Saints staff. Carmichael worked with Brady from 2017 to 1018 when Brady was an offensive assistant. He is currently a Denver Broncos senior offensive assistant under Sean Payton but has 15 years of coordinator experience from their time with the Saints. Brady will call the plays for the offense, just as Payton did back in New Orleans.
Carmichael began his NFL career in 2000 as a tight ends coach for the Cleveland Browns, eventually joining the Saints staff in 2006 as quarterbacks coach for Drew Brees, later being promoted to coordinator in 2009. That offense ranked first in yards in the NFL four times and finished in the top 10 in scoring in all of his first 11 seasons as coordinator. They also won Super Bowl XLIV the season after Carmichael was promoted. While he wasn’t the playcaller, he was involved in the game planning and the development of Drew Brees, who Brees has always credited as a quieter guy who made an impact.
Here is the full story from Bills Roundtable writer Mike Straw on the first big hire under Brady.
Buffalo will now look to hire their guys at defensive coordinator and special teams, but the head of the offense is set now with Carmichael, who will look to elevate Allen the same way he worked with Brees.
