The Chargers rolled to a 31–14 win over the Raiders behind Kimani Vidal’s breakout performance, but Justin Herbert’s left-hand injury now puts his status in doubt as Los Angeles fights to stay alive in a tight AFC playoff race.

The Los Angeles Chargers returned from their bye week with a huge win over division rival Las Vegas Raiders, keeping pace in a crowded AFC playoff hunt. The Chargers leaned on a strong running game from Kimani Vidal to roll to a 31–14 victory in what began as an ugly contest for both teams. Despite the win, there are still some causes for concern moving forward.

Justin Herbert and the Chargers came out of the gates hot. After forcing a three-and-out to open the game, the offense capitalized with key plays from Keenan Allen and Kimani Vidal. The Bolts extended the drive for nearly nine minutes before Herbert connected with Quentin Johnston for a 10-yard touchdown—a sign of things to come later in the matchup.

Things grew murkier for the Chargers the rest of the first half. Although they controlled the time of possession and consistently reached the red zone, a Herbert interception followed by a turnover on downs allowed the Raiders to remain in striking distance. To make matters worse, Herbert was forced to leave the game after the touchdown pass to Johnston because of a left-hand injury. He returned in the second quarter but appeared limited.

Jim Harbaugh’s squad emerged from halftime with a renewed, aggressive demeanor that helped them take full control. On the third play of the half, Vidal bounced around the left side of the offensive line and broke free for a career-high 59-yard touchdown run. The second-year back showcased the elusiveness that has kept the Chargers’ ground game alive this season.

The rest of the contest was dominated by the Chargers. Greg Roman’s offense controlled the ball for nearly 36 minutes, compared to just 24 for Las Vegas. With steady defensive play and timely offensive execution, the Bolts secured the win and improved to 8–4 on the season.

Now the question shifts to Justin Herbert’s availability next week against the Philadelphia Eagles. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Herbert will undergo surgery on his left hand on Monday, and his status moving forward is uncertain. If the Chargers hope to secure a playoff berth, they will need their franchise quarterback healthy down the stretch.

Chargers fans will be holding their breathe the next few days hoping for positive news about Justin Herbert. Luckily for the Chargers they will have a long week with their next game being on Monday Night Football. With only five games remaining, this win over the Raiders was crucial for the Chargers.
