The Chargers opened activation windows for rookie RB Omarion Hampton and DL Otito Ogbonnia as they return from injury. Hampton’s physical running style and Ogbonnia’s depth could give Los Angeles a needed boost heading into the final stretch of the season.

The Los Angeles Chargers appear to be coming off their annual bye week a little healthier. Head coach Jim Harbaugh announced on Tuesday that the Chargers had opened the activation window for rookie running back Omarion Hampton. Alongside Hampton, the Chargers have also opened the activation window for defensive lineman Otito Ogbonnia.

Hampton’s return to practice on Tuesday ends a six-game absence for the first-round draft pick, who injured his ankle during the matchup against the Washington Commanders. While the injury didn’t seem like much at the time, it was enough to land Hampton on injured reserve. Kimani Vidal has been able to decently fill the void at running back, but the return of Hampton will be a welcome sight for Greg Roman’s offense.

Although Vidal has had some bright moments for the Chargers, Hampton brings a level of physicality to an offense in need of it. Prior to his injury, Hampton had racked up 314 rushing yards on a 4.8 yards-per-carry average. On top of that, he has also been a factor in the passing game, reeling in 136 yards on 20 receptions. Where his presence is truly felt, though, is in his yards after contact — he runs with a tenacity that makes him extremely difficult to bring down.

Beyond the raw production, Hampton’s return also allows the Chargers to restore balance to their offensive identity. Roman’s scheme has leaned heavily on ball control and sustained drives, something that became harder to achieve without Hampton’s ability to break tackles and extend plays. His downhill style forces defenses to stack the box, which in turn opens up more manageable passing situations for Justin Herbert. Simply having Hampton available changes the way teams defend Los Angeles, giving the offense a dimension it has sorely missed during his absence.

The Chargers are also welcoming back Otito Ogbonnia to practice. Following a very disappointing loss against the Jacksonville Jaguars in which the defense could not get stops, Ogbonnia will be a helpful depth piece for Jesse Minter’s unit. The defensive lineman has not been a major factor for the Chargers this season, but he remains an important part of the team’s interior rotation. Jesse Minter may look to Otito Ogbonnia to step in if his current lineup cannot get the job done.

With two key contributors trending toward a return, the Chargers may finally be getting healthy at the right time. Hampton’s physical running style and Ogbonnia’s depth on the defensive line could provide a much-needed boost as Los Angeles enters the final stretch of the season. If both players can ramp up quickly, the Chargers’ push for the playoffs may look far more promising than it did just a week ago.
