Well, Chargers fans can breathe a sigh of relief — at least for now.
It was reported Saturday by Dianna Russini of The Athletic that Mike McDaniel canceled his scheduled interview with the Buffalo Bills for their vacant head coaching position. The news comes after reports earlier in the week suggested McDaniel had accepted the Chargers’ offensive coordinator role, only for things to go quiet as his name continued to surface in connection with other openings around the league.
Naturally, Chargers fans have been growing anxious. Social media has been buzzing with speculation as the days pass without an official announcement from the team. The idea of McDaniel, one of the NFL’s most creative offensive minds, pairing up with Justin Herbert has been hard for fans not to get excited about. But with no confirmation, questions began to pile up.
That uncertainty only grew on Friday when reports surfaced that McDaniel would interview with the Buffalo Bills. Throughout the day, however, there was no indication from the Bills that the interview had actually taken place. Some fans took that as a positive sign, wondering if the meeting was scrapped altogether. Others feared it meant McDaniel was still weighing his options and could walk away from a Chargers team desperately in need of an offensive overhaul.
Russini’s report that McDaniel canceled the Bills interview provided some clarity, but it didn’t completely end the speculation. According to her, McDaniel remains in contention for the Las Vegas Raiders’ head coaching job. Whether he is a top candidate there remains unclear, but the mere possibility presents another roadblock to finalizing a deal with the Chargers.
That has led many to ask if this entire situation is worth the headache. Jim Harbaugh was brought in to stabilize a franchise that has lacked consistency for years. Is it wise to bring in an offensive coordinator who appears undecided, especially one whose coaching background differs so much from Harbaugh’s traditional style?
The short answer is yes.
Mike McDaniel’s résumé speaks for itself. His success, most notably with the Miami Dolphins, has made him the most sought-after offensive mind in this coaching cycle. His ability to design an offense that maximizes speed, space and quarterback talent is exactly what the Chargers have been missing. Pairing McDaniel with a quarterback who possesses Herbert’s arm talent and processing ability could unlock the best season of Herbert’s career.
The Chargers have fallen short in back-to-back seasons largely because of offensive inconsistency and predictability. That reality was never more glaring than in the playoffs, where the offense managed just three points under Greg Roman. While no hire guarantees success, it’s hard to imagine a McDaniel-led offense producing that kind of result.
For now, Chargers fans wait. The finish line appears close, even if a few obstacles remain. If the team ultimately lands McDaniel, the temporary chaos will feel well worth it — especially if it results in the explosive offense fans have been begging to see.
