The early connection between Justin Herbert and Mike McDaniel has been one of the biggest storylines of the Chargers’ offseason. According to Jim Harbaugh, the two are “on a different level” intellectually, making it feel like the fit may be even better than expected.

When the Chargers hired Mike McDaniel as offensive coordinator, the immediate reaction was obvious. One of the brightest offensive minds in football would now get the opportunity to work with one of the most talented quarterbacks in the NFL.

A few months into the partnership, it already sounds like the fit is even better than expected.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh recently spoke about the relationship between Justin Herbert and McDaniel, and his comments should have Chargers fans excited. Harbaugh noted that “they're at a different level than me intellectually”, insinuating that the fit has been even better than he originally anticipated.

That may not seem like a big deal in June, but it could have a massive impact once the season begins.

Herbert has spent the first six years of his career learning different offensive systems and adapting to new play-callers. Despite the constant changes, he has continued to produce at a high level. What he has rarely had is an offensive coordinator whose system appears specifically designed to maximize his unique skill set.

McDaniel’s offenses in Miami were built around timing, spacing, pre-snap motion and creating easy throws for the quarterback. The scheme consistently generated explosive plays while helping protect the quarterback from unnecessary pressure. Harbaugh has even pointed to McDaniel’s offensive philosophy as a way to better protect Herbert after he absorbed far too many hits in 2025.

The exciting part is that Herbert brings physical tools that McDaniel has never coached before.

Tua Tagovailoa found success in McDaniel’s system, but Herbert offers a different level of arm strength, mobility and off-script playmaking ability. McDaniel has already joked about Herbert’s arm talent, and it is easy to imagine the offensive possibilities that could emerge once the quarterback becomes fully comfortable in the scheme.

There have also been reports that McDaniel put together extensive presentations showing Herbert what the offense could become. That level of collaboration is important. Great offenses are not simply installed by coaches. They are built through a partnership between the play-caller and the quarterback.

The Chargers have invested heavily in surrounding Herbert with talent. Ladd McConkey remains one of the top weapons on the roster. Quentin Johnston is entering a critical contract year after a strong 2025 season. Tre Harris has generated positive reviews during offseason work. The addition of David Njoku gives Herbert another proven target over the middle.

Now the focus shifts to putting all the pieces together.

No one is handing the Chargers a top-five offense based on offseason headlines. They still have to prove it on Sundays. But the early signs are difficult to ignore. Every time Harbaugh talks about Herbert and McDaniel, it sounds less like a coach discussing two employees and more like someone watching a perfect football marriage develop in real time.

If that chemistry continues to grow throughout training camp and into the regular season, the Chargers offense could become one of the most dangerous units in the NFL.
