The Chargers added one of the NFL’s fastest backs in Keaton Mitchell, and his explosiveness could unlock new layers in Mike McDaniel’s offense. Paired with Omarion Hampton, the backfield suddenly gives the Chargers speed, power and plenty of creative possibilities.
The Los Angeles Chargers made a move on Thursday that might not dominate headlines like a blockbuster trade or a massive contract for a star receiver, but it could end up being one of the most intriguing signings of their offseason. The team agreed to terms with running back Keaton Mitchell on a two-year deal, adding one of the fastest players in the NFL to Mike McDaniel’s offense.
Speed changes everything in football. And that’s exactly what Mitchell brings.
Mitchell burst onto the scene with the Baltimore Ravens thanks to his explosiveness and ability to turn any touch into a big play. Despite limited opportunities early in his career, he averaged an impressive 6.3 yards per carry and totaled 767 rushing yards across his first three seasons. His track-level speed was on display at the NFL Combine, where he ran a blazing 4.37-second 40-yard dash, putting him among the fastest running backs entering the league.
Now that speed is heading to Los Angeles.
The Chargers’ offense under McDaniel is expected to lean heavily into creativity, motion and mismatches. That’s the exact type of system where a player like Mitchell can thrive. Defenses have to respect his ability to get outside and turn the corner, which forces them to stretch horizontally. The moment a defense overcommits, it opens up opportunities everywhere else on the field.
What makes this signing even more interesting is how Mitchell fits alongside Omarion Hampton. Hampton already brings power and physicality to the Chargers’ backfield, giving the offense a strong downhill runner who can handle volume. Mitchell, on the other hand, is the lightning to Hampton’s thunder.
That combination alone gives McDaniel plenty to work with.
But the possibilities expand even further if Kimani Vidal continues to develop and earns touches as well. Suddenly, the Chargers could have three running backs with very different skill sets. Hampton can pound the interior, Mitchell can stretch defenses with outside runs and explosive plays and Vidal provides another versatile option who can contribute in multiple phases.
For an offensive mind like McDaniel, that type of diversity in the backfield is a dream scenario.
We’ve already seen what he can do with speed at the running back position. During his time in Miami, McDaniel built one of the most explosive offenses in football with De’Von Achane as a key weapon. Achane’s speed forced defenses into impossible decisions—play too aggressively and risk getting burned outside, or sit back and allow the offense to control the tempo.
Mitchell has the type of speed that can create those same problems.
And when defenses start worrying about that speed, it naturally helps the rest of the offense. Lighter boxes make life easier for Hampton. Play-action becomes more dangerous. And perhaps most importantly, Justin Herbert benefits from defenses that can’t simply sit back and focus on the passing game.
The Chargers’ offense has needed more explosiveness for a while. This signing may not fix every problem overnight, but it gives McDaniel another weapon capable of creating big plays at any moment.
Sometimes the smallest additions unlock the biggest possibilities.
If Mitchell stays healthy and the Chargers use him the right way, this move could quietly become one of the more important pieces in shaping what McDaniel’s offense looks like in Los Angeles.
