Ladd McConkey was expected to lead the Chargers' receiving corps, but a disappointing 2025 season and a string of injuries in 2026 have raised concerns. To become Justin Herbert's go-to target, McConkey needs to prove he can stay healthy and consistently produce.
The Los Angeles Chargers made it clear that they believe Ladd McConkey can be the team’s No. 1 wide receiver. Unfortunately, through the first part of the 2026 season, that bet has not paid off the way they hoped. Between a disappointing sophomore season and a year that has already been plagued by injuries, McConkey needs to prove he can stay on the field and become the reliable leader this receiving room needs.
There is no question that McConkey has the talent to be a difference-maker. His rookie season showed what he could bring to Justin Herbert’s offense, and his ability to create separation and make plays after the catch made him one of the team’s most promising young players. The Chargers had every reason to believe he could take another step forward and establish himself as their top receiving option.
That has not happened yet.
McConkey struggled to maintain his rookie-year production in 2025, and the Chargers were hoping a new offensive coordinator in Mike McDaniel would help get him back on track. McDaniel’s offensive system should provide plenty of opportunities for a receiver with McConkey’s skill set. However, those opportunities mean very little if he cannot consistently be available.
The 2026 season has been a frustrating one on that front. McConkey dealt with a rib injury early in the year before battling a foot issue that limited his availability and playing time. He even appeared in uniform against Denver without playing a meaningful role. After returning against Kansas City, he suffered a concussion that forced him out of the game.
It is difficult for any player to establish a rhythm when injuries keep interrupting his season. It is even more difficult when that player is expected to be the focal point of the passing game.
The Chargers need McConkey to be more than a talented receiver who can make plays when healthy. They need someone Herbert can depend on every week, especially with the offensive line dealing with its own significant injury problems and the rest of the receiving corps struggling to stay healthy.
This is not to suggest that McConkey is responsible for every injury or that he should be blamed for suffering them. Injuries are part of football, and some are simply unavoidable. However, availability is an important part of being a team’s top receiver, and the Chargers cannot afford to enter every game wondering whether their best wideout will be able to contribute.
The situation also creates questions about the team’s long-term plans at the position. If McConkey is going to be the unquestioned No. 1 receiver, the Chargers need to see him consistently produce at that level. Otherwise, they may need to reconsider how they build the receiving room around Herbert.
McConkey still has time to turn things around. His talent has not disappeared, and a healthy stretch of games could give him the opportunity to regain his confidence and build chemistry with McDaniel’s offense. The priority now should be getting healthy and finding a way to stay on the field.
The Chargers invested in McConkey because they believed he could lead this receiving corps for years to come. That potential is still there, but potential only goes so far. Before he can become the reliable No. 1 receiver Los Angeles needs, McConkey has to prove that he can stay healthy and consistently be available when the team needs him most.
