The Chargers are running out of time to turn their season around. If they lose again on Sunday, Joe Hortiz needs to shift his focus toward the future and start listening to trade offers for veterans like Khalil Mack.
Sunday could end up being one of the most important games of the Los Angeles Chargers’ season, regardless of the outcome. Sitting at 0-6, the Chargers have reached a point where it is becoming increasingly difficult to justify approaching this season as anything other than a lost one. While the organization may still believe there is time to turn things around, the results on the field have made it clear that some major decisions need to be made.
That is why Sunday’s matchup against the Los Angeles Rams could be a turning point, particularly when it comes to the upcoming trade deadline.
Reports have indicated that general manager Joe Hortiz has been reluctant to entertain trade offers for some of the team’s veteran players. According to The Athletic’s Jonathan Jones, the Chargers have shut down trade inquiries despite their disastrous start. Players like Khalil Mack have been mentioned as potential trade candidates, but the organization has been unwilling to wave the white flag just yet.
It is understandable that Hortiz and Jim Harbaugh do not want to give up on the season. Nobody wants to admit that a team with playoff expectations has completely fallen apart before the halfway point. However, there comes a time when the organization needs to be realistic about where things stand.
If the Chargers lose again on Sunday and fall to 0-7, that should absolutely change their approach.
Khalil Mack is the most obvious player to consider moving. He remains a valuable pass rusher and could be an attractive addition for several playoff contenders. With his contract situation and age, the Chargers have a limited window to receive something in return for him rather than potentially watching him leave in free agency.
There are other players worth considering as well. Bud Dupree, Donte Jackson and Quentin Johnston could all generate interest depending on what other teams are looking for. Hortiz should be willing to listen to offers and determine whether moving some of these players makes sense for the organization’s future.
The Chargers should not make trades simply for the sake of making them. They need to receive fair compensation and avoid creating unnecessary holes on the roster. However, acquiring additional draft capital and giving younger players more opportunities should be a priority if this season continues down its current path.
There is also the bigger picture to consider. Justin Herbert is still the centerpiece of this franchise, and the Chargers need to do everything possible to build a roster around him that can compete for a championship. Holding onto veterans who might not be around next season does little to accomplish that if the team is no longer realistically competing.
Sunday is an opportunity for the Chargers to show that there is still something worth believing in. A win would provide some much-needed momentum and potentially keep the organization from making drastic changes. But another loss should make it increasingly difficult for Hortiz to justify standing pat.
The trade deadline is November 10, meaning there is not much time left to make decisions. If the Chargers fall to 0-7, it should be the moment they finally accept reality and start making moves for the future. This season has not gone according to plan, and the organization cannot afford to let that hurt its ability to compete in 2027.
