The Chargers defense faces a major challenge without Derwin James, whose hamstring setback could keep him sidelined for several more weeks. With the offense struggling, the defense will need to find a way to overcome his absence.
The Los Angeles Chargers have dealt with plenty of adversity throughout the 2026 season, but losing Derwin James for an extended period could be one of their biggest challenges yet. While the defense has been one of the few bright spots during an otherwise disappointing season, James’ continued absence is going to make things much more difficult for Chris O’Leary and the rest of the unit.
James has not played since September 27 after suffering a hamstring injury. Unfortunately, his recovery has not gone as planned. Head coach Jim Harbaugh revealed Wednesday that James suffered a setback during his rehabilitation and could potentially be placed on injured reserve. That would mean the Chargers would have to go at least another four games without one of their most important defensive players.
The timing could not be much worse. The Chargers are preparing to face the Los Angeles Rams this Sunday before heading into a difficult stretch of their schedule. With the team sitting at 0-6, there is already plenty of pressure on the defense to continue giving the Chargers a chance to compete.
James brings something to the defense that is extremely difficult to replace. His versatility allows him to line up all over the field, whether that means playing deep safety, covering receivers, defending the run or creating pressure as a blitzer. He is one of the few players capable of impacting nearly every aspect of the defense.
Without him, the Chargers lose a significant piece of their defensive identity. Elijah Molden, Tony Jefferson and Genesis Smith have helped fill the void in the secondary, but asking those players to collectively replace everything James brings is a difficult task.
There is also the impact his absence has on the defensive scheme. O’Leary has done a respectable job in his first season coordinating the defense, particularly considering the injuries the unit has dealt with. However, James gives him additional flexibility when designing coverages and disguising defensive looks. Opposing quarterbacks have to account for where James is lined up and what he might do after the snap. That uncertainty becomes much harder to create without him.
The defense has already shown that it can survive without James for a few games. However, there is a difference between managing his absence temporarily and potentially going another month or longer without him. The secondary will need consistent contributions from its other safeties and cornerbacks if it hopes to maintain its level of play.
The Chargers are going to need their defense more than ever as the offense continues to struggle. Mike McDaniel’s unit has not provided much support, leaving the defense in difficult situations throughout the season. Losing James only makes that responsibility more challenging.
At this point, the Chargers have little reason to rush James back before he is completely healthy. With the season already looking like a lost cause, protecting one of the franchise’s most important players should be the priority. Still, his absence will be felt every time the defense takes the field.
The Chargers have managed to stay competitive defensively despite several injuries. Whether they can continue doing that without James for an extended period will be one of the biggest storylines to watch over the remainder of the season.
