With the Los Angeles Chargers resting many starters on Sunday against the Denver Broncos, it is safe to say that head coach Jim Harbaugh is comfortable heading into the playoffs regardless of seeding. The Chargers believe that with a healthy Justin Herbert and several other key contributors returning, they have the ability to compete with — and beat — anyone in the postseason.
However, even with most of the main starters sitting, there is still plenty for Harbaugh and his coaching staff to evaluate. As the regular season comes to a close and playoff pressure begins to mount, the Chargers must ensure they are firing on all cylinders. With some lingering weak spots still present on the roster, Sunday’s matchup against the Broncos provides a valuable opportunity to evaluate under-the-radar talent and assess depth heading into the playoffs.
So what exactly could the Chargers’ coaching staff be looking for on Sunday?
Offensive Line Replacements. By far the most disappointing aspect of the Chargers’ season has been offensive line play. While injuries have certainly played a role, quarterback Justin Herbert has taken far too many hits, causing the offense to stall at critical moments.
Sunday is expected to bring two notable changes up front. Backup center Andre James is likely to start in place of Bradley Bozeman, while Trevor Penning should see action at right guard in Mekhi Becton’s spot. Fans have been clamoring for James to receive an opportunity since he signed with the Chargers during the offseason. As for Penning, this is a chance to make a meaningful statement. Becton has not played up to the level the Chargers hoped for and has struggled to stay healthy. While it is unlikely that Becton will lose his starting role outright, a solid performance from Penning could make him a valuable insurance option once the playoffs begin.
Rookie Wide Receiver Contributions. General manager Joe Hortiz made it a priority this offseason to add more weapons for Herbert. That effort included drafting wide receivers Tre’ Harris and KeAndre Lambert-Smith.
With the Chargers’ depth at the position, neither rookie has had many chances to make a major impact. Harris has begun to earn Herbert’s trust in recent weeks, while Lambert-Smith is still searching for a breakthrough moment. Sunday could present an opportunity for both players to shine. While offense may be difficult to come by against a strong Broncos defense, both rookies should see an expanded role and increased target share.
Can Oronde Gadsden Bounce Back? Oronde Gadsden has been one of the biggest revelations for the Chargers this season. The rookie tight end ranks tenth among all tight ends in receiving yards and fifth among all rookies overall.
That said, Gadsden endured a rare off day last Saturday against the Houston Texans. He had several costly drops, including one that led to a game-altering red-zone interception. While he did eventually find the end zone, questions remain about how he will respond. Sunday offers Gadsden a chance to reset mentally and regain confidence before the playoffs, where his role will be critical.
While Sunday’s game may not carry postseason implications in the standings, it is far from meaningless for the Chargers. For Jim Harbaugh and his staff, this matchup serves as a final evaluation period — a chance to assess depth, identify reliable backups and ensure younger players are ready if called upon in high-pressure situations. Strong performances from the offensive line replacements, rookie receivers and key contributors like Gadsden could provide the Chargers with added confidence heading into the playoffs. Ultimately, Sunday is about preparation, resilience, and momentum — three factors that could make all the difference once the postseason begins.
