Reports are linking the Chargers to Deebo Samuel as they look to add a veteran WR to help Justin Herbert. He’d bring explosiveness and versatility, but Keenan Allen is also in the mix as a familiar, steady option for a young receiver room still developing.
There’s been a lot of buzz lately connecting the Chargers to veteran wide receiver Deebo Samuel, and honestly, it’s not hard to see why the conversation is happening. Los Angeles is clearly trying to reshape its offensive identity around Justin Herbert, and while they’ve got young talent in the receiver room, it still feels like something is missing — that proven, physical playmaker who can change a game in multiple ways.
Right now, the Chargers’ wide receiver group is built around players like Ladd McConkey, Quentin Johnston and Tre Harris. That’s a solid young core, but it’s also inconsistent and still developing. That’s exactly why reports have started linking Los Angeles to veteran options like Deebo Samuel or even a reunion with Keenan Allen. The idea is simple: bring in someone who can stabilize the offense, especially on third downs and in high-leverage moments.
Deebo, in particular, brings a very specific skill set that would immediately stand out in this offense. He’s not just a traditional receiver — he’s a hybrid weapon who can line up in the slot, out wide or even take carries out of the backfield. That kind of versatility would give Mike McDaniel a lot more creativity, especially with how defenses already have to account for Herbert.
But the question is whether the fit is clean or redundant.
On paper, Deebo overlaps a bit with what the Chargers already have. They’ve already got YAC-focused receivers and gadget-type concepts built into their offense. What they don’t have is a true alpha boundary receiver or a consistent “move the chains” veteran presence. That’s where Keenan Allen comes back into the conversation as well — a familiar face who already understands the system and still brings elite route running, even in the later stages of his career.
In fact, reports have even suggested the Chargers aren’t closing the door on bringing Allen back or making another veteran addition depending on how the offseason shakes out. That tells you everything you need to know about where the team thinks it is right now: still searching for stability at wide receiver.
So where does Deebo fit in all this?
If the Chargers are looking for a spark — someone who can create explosive plays and add toughness to the offense — Deebo absolutely makes sense. He would immediately raise the ceiling of the unit and give Herbert another dynamic weapon who can win in space. But if the goal is more about structure, consistency and helping the young receivers develop, a player like Keenan Allen might actually be the cleaner fit.
At the end of the day, this feels like one of those classic Chargers offseason debates: go for the flashy, high-upside move, or stick with the steady veteran presence who already knows the system. Deebo Samuel would definitely make this offense more dangerous — but whether that translates into balance and long-term success is a different question entirely.
Either way, the Chargers adding any proven veteran receiver feels like a real possibility this offseason, and Deebo’s name isn’t going away anytime soon in those rumors.
