Titans Request Interviews With Chiefs Coordinators cover image

Titans target Chiefs coordinators Nagy and Spagnuolo for head coaching interviews as the coaching carousel begins to spin.

The Kansas City Chiefs season is over as they missed the playoffs for the first time in a decade.

On Black Monday, coaches were fired, including Cleveland Browns coach Kevin Stefanski and Las Vegas Raiders coach Pete Carroll.

The Tennessee Titans and New York Giants already had openings from the middle of the season, and the Atlanta Falcons fired Raheem Morris and GM Terry Fontenot after Sunday's game.

Chiefs OC Matt Nagy was expected to get an interview with at least the Titans, and on Monday, he officially received a request, as did Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

"Titans now have requested head coach interviews with Broncos DC Vance Joseph, Colts DC Lou Anarumo, Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo and Chiefs OC Matt Nagy."

The Titans are expected to cast a wide net, and so far, they have several candidates they have requested interviews with.

Spagnuolo is a seasoned veteran, and at 66 years old, he is a name to watch. He began his career as an assistant coach at UMass, and then he spent time at several colleges and even overseas with the Frankfurt Galaxy of NFL Europe.

In 1999, he was hired by the Philadelphia Eagles and a defensive assistant before becoming the defensive backs coach and then the linebackers coach. In 2007, he then joined the New York Giants as the DC.

Following that stint with the Giants, he was the head coach of the the St. Louis Rams for three seasons, but he went just 10-38 before being let go.

Spagnuolo has also worked with the New Orleans Saints, Baltimore Ravens, and was again the Giants DC and even the interim head coach for a bit in 2017, but he has resurrected his career a bit with Kansas City since joining in 2019.

For the Chiefs, potentially losing both Nagy and Spagnuolo in the same cycle would be a tough blow, but not something Andy Reid and the franchise won't be able to overcome.

As for Nagy, he was the head coach of the Chicago Bears earlier in his tenure, and Titans GM Mike Borgonzi worked with Nagy when he was at Kansas City, so there are some ties there as well.

This is just the beginning of what could be a busy coaching cycle, but the Chiefs coordinators are already receiving interviews just a day after the season came to an end.
