Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Keenan Allen was arrested late Saturday night following his preseason debut with the team.
Newly acquired Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Keenan Allen was arrested in downtown Indianapolis late Saturday night/early Sunday morning for Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated (OWI), according to Marion County detention records. The arrest was first reported by FOX59.
Around 1:00 a.m. ET, on South Meridian Street, Allen, 34, was in a vehicle that was approached by police from the Indianapolis Metro Police Department for being parked in a no-parking zone, and officers noticed signs of intoxication at the time of the interaction.
Allen was arrested and charged with OWI-Endanger Person (Class A Misdemeanor) and OWI-Alcohol Concentration Equivalent (ACE) .08 or More (Class C Misdemeanor) and booked into the Marion County Adult Detention Center.
Allen made his preseason debut with the Colts on Saturday afternoon about a half-mile nearby at Lucas Oil Stadium before the arrest, making one catch for 24 yards while playing in four snaps.
The Colts released a statement about the arrest, saying, "We are aware of the incident involving Keenan Allen last night. We are in the process of gathering more information and have no further comment at this time."
The NFL's substance abuse policy dictates that first-time offenders, such as Allen, who are convicted of or admit to a violation, are subject to a three-game suspension.
The Colts signed Allen on Aug. 19 to a one-year deal worth up to $8.32 million, and he was introduced to the local media that day before participating in his first practice the following day on Aug. 20.
Allen was signed to complete a receiver corps consisting of Alec Pierce, Josh Downs, and Ashton Dulin. Allen's previous seven years of experience playing for Colts head coach Shane Steichen, while the pair were with the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers, made him a natural fit with the Colts.
In 171 career games, Allen has 1,055 receptions for 12,051 yards and 70 touchdowns. He currently ranks 13th in NFL history in receptions, 33rd in receiving yards, and is tied for 52nd in receiving touchdowns.
Allen is 15 receptions behind Colts legend and current wide receivers coach Reggie Wayne (1,070) for 11th place in receptions, and 47 receptions behind Colts Hall-of-Famer Marvin Harrison (1,102) for fifth place.
The Colts must trim their roster from 90 to 52 players by 6:00 p.m. ET on Sunday evening, so this certainly will cause them to consider some adjustments.
If punishment is handed down to Allen by the NFL, it is not yet known when the determination will be made.
