The Indianapolis Colts began their three-day mandatory minicamp on Tuesday, with a rookie mid-round draft pick stealing the play of the day.
INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Colts' three-day mandatory minicamp is underway, as they get their final work in together before training camp begins in late July.
Here's how the hour-plus practice went.
TEAM
— There were a handful of players who did not fully participate during voluntary OTAs over the last couple of weeks who were back on the field this week for mandatory minicamp. Notably, running back Jonathan Taylor and cornerback Sauce Gardner were present on Tuesday.
— The team is extra cautious with player injuries this time of year. The players who did not participate in practice: wide receiver Alec Pierce (ankle), cornerback Charvarius Ward Sr. (day-to-day with back tightness), defensive tackle DeForest Buckner (neck), offensive lineman Jalen Farmer (knee), cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt (foot), cornerback Mekhi Blackmon, offensive tackle Bayron Matos, safety Austin Brown, and safety Ben Nikkel.
— Safety Reuben Lowery III was placed on the Reserve/Retired list on Tuesday.
OFFENSE
— Quarterback Daniel Jones continued participating in positional work and 7-on-7s, but not 11-on-11s, which head coach Shane Steichen stated will remain the case until training camp. Jones was 1-for-2 in 7-on-7s, completing a pass to tight end Tyler Warren and a pass broken up by cornerback Johnathan Edwards. Jones also had a deep pass down the left side for Ashton Dulin, but the defender was called for a penalty.
— Riley Leonard and Anthony Richardson Sr. continued to rotate first and second-team reps during 11-on-11s, with Leonard getting the first crack at it on Tuesday. Leonard went 5-of-6 during 11-on-11s, with completions to Warren, Josh Downs, Jonathan Taylor, Ulysses Bentley IV, and Will Mallory. Leonard threw an interception during 7-on-7s to rookie linebacker Bryce Boettcher.
— Richardson was 6-of-7 passing during 11-on-11s, with completions to Mallory, Taylor, Anthony Gould, Coleman Owen, Mo Alie-Cox, and DJ Giddens.
DEFENSE
— Boettcher, one of the Colts' two fourth-round picks, made the play of the day when he stepped in front of a Leonard pass to the outside and took it back for a pick-six.
— Edwards continued to make plays on Tuesday, adding his third pass breakup among the three open practices that the media have watched in the last three weeks.
— Second-year safety Hunter Wohler, who missed last year with a Lisfranc injury in his foot, forced a fumble on a catch by Gould.
The Colts will continue mandatory minicamp on Wednesday, with practice at 12:55 p.m. ET, and again on Thursday at 10:05 a.m. ET. They will then break for six weeks until training camp at Grand Park Sports Complex in Westfield, Ind.
