INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Indianapolis Colts have been hurting at the cornerback position, but reinforcements could soon be on the way.
The team is opening the 21-day practice window for cornerback Jaylon Jones, who is on the Injured Reserve list with a hamstring. By the end of the 21 days, the Colts must decide whether to active Jones from IR or leave him on it.
Jones initially suffered a hamstring injury during training camp on July 29, which caused him to be out until just before Week 1 of the regular season. He was able to play opening week against the Miami Dolphins, but then reaggravated the injury in the game. The Colts then placed him on IR the following week.
Jones is just one of the issues the Colts have been plagued with at cornerback, as rookie Justin Walley was in line to start before suffering a season-ending ACL injury in camp, Xavien Howard retired, Kenny Moore II missed three games with an Achilles injury, and Charvarius Ward Sr. was placed on IR last week with a concussion.
With Ward out and Howard gone, the Colts have leaned on Mekhi Blackmon and Johnathan Edwards on the outside, with Moore and Chris Lammons on the inside.
Last week in a win over the Los Angeles Chargers, the Colts defense allowed a season-high 391 passing yards.
Jones could provide reliable depth or find his way back into the starting lineup, where he had been for his first two seasons since the Colts drafted him in the seventh round of the 2023 draft.
