Colts' Passing Game Stats Through 6 Practices

WESTFIELD, Ind. — The Indianapolis Colts have put six practices under their belt during training camp at Grand Park Sports Campus, including the last two being fully padded.

Quarterback Daniel Jones has made his improbable return from December Achilles surgery, participating in full team 11-on-11s from the beginning and not missing any time. Meanwhile, Anthony Richardson Sr. and Riley Leonard battle for the backup role, while Easton Stick runs the developmental group.

Several pass-catchers have been able to earn valuable reps, especially the first-team receivers, while Alec Pierce continues to sit out while recovering from ankle surgery. Along with Pierce, tight end Tyler Warren and wide receiver Josh Downs are expected to absorb much of the attention left behind when veteran receiver Michael Pittman Jr. was traded this offseason.

So far, here is how the Colts' passing game has looked during camp, with statistics pulled specifically from 11-on-11 team drills.

41-of-58 (70.7%), 4 TD, 1 INT

Jones looks completely fine physically, as if he'd never had major surgery, taking off on full-speed scrambles multiple times. He's been efficient and accurate, kept the offense in rhythm, and spread the ball around.

Jones has had several chunk plays on third downs and also excelled in the red zone, with a pair of touchdowns to Downs, as well as Warren and receiver Laquon Treadwell.

There have been sizable gains to Warren on corner routes (another to tight end Will Mallory), and on Wednesday, Jones connected on deep posts for about 50 yards to Treadwell and receiver Ashton Dulin.

Jones did throw a bad interception on Day 2 to linebacker Austin Ajiake, just trying to fit a throw into a window that wasn't quite there.

21-of-33 (63.6%), 1 TD, 0 INT

In the battle for QB2, Leonard has seen slightly more opportunity with the second-team offense than Richardson to this point, although the Colts have been attempting to even up the load over the last couple of practices.

Leonard appears to be "finding the layups" in the offense, as 12 of his 21 completions have been to tight ends or running backs.

Last Saturday was Leonard's best practice, hitting receiver Nick Wesbrook-Ikhine on a deep post for 50 yards, and some other productive strikes during a late-game situation.

Leonard threw an interception during 7-on-7s on the first day to safety Trey Washington.

16-of-21 (76.2%), 2 TD, 0 INT

Richardson has been riding a roller coaster throughout camp. He's had some excellent downfield throws, but along with issues involving his timing and anticipation, securing the snap has been a problem, as he's bobbled or dropped several shotgun snaps. He also threw an interception on the second day during 7-on-7s to cornerback Cameron Mitchell.

Richardson made one of the most impressive throws of camp on Day 3, uncorking a 50-yard bomb down the right sideline to receiver Sahmir Hagans for a touchdown over cornerback Jaylon Jones.

7-of-10 (70.0%), 0 TD, 0 INT

Stick has only been getting live reps during brief "developmental" periods of practice, in which they've run two sessions of 11-on-11s. On the first day, Stick was 5-of-5, but came back down on the second day, going 2-of-5, with some inaccurate throws.

Without Pierce, Jones has clearly leaned heavily into the next group you'd expect him to, as Downs and Warren lead the way, while Treadwell and Dulin are right on their heels. In the regular season, running back Jonathan Taylor might be closer to the pack after a career-high 46 catches last year.

Rookie Deion Burks has been a favorite of Leonard, Richardson, and Stick due to his ability to quickly win off the line of scrimmage and get open on things like slant routes and digs.

Westbrook-Ikhine has come away with some big catches with the top three quarterbacks, including a big gain on a contested catch against cornerback Justin Walley, thrown by Jones, and a 50-yarder down the middle from Leonard during the only indoor practice.

Second-year running back DJ Giddens has dropped a couple of passes, which has skewed his productivity, and recent safety-to-receiver convert Ben Nikkel hasn't been able to come down with some of his frequent targets, although he's made his mark in 7-on-7s.
