The Indianapolis Colts are reportedly searching for defensive help at the NFL trade deadline.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Indianapolis Colts are atop the NFL standings with a 6-1 record, but complacency is the furthest thing from their minds at present.

Offensively, Indy is on a historic pace. Their 3.46 points per drive are the most by any NFL team of the 2000s. On the defensive side of the ball, the Colts have been significantly more effective than last year, but have dealt with a rash of injuries that they have somehow overcome to this point. They've also surrendered 400 yards of offense in three out of the last four games.

When one player goes down, the Colts have been looking at outside sources to fill the void — Mekhi Blackmon, Mike Hilton, and Germaine Pratt are just a few examples — so with the NFL's November 4 trade deadline looming, sound logic says the Colts will look to keep improving.

Currently, cornerbacks Charvarius Ward Sr., Jaylon Jones, and Justin Walley are on the Injured Reserve list, and Xavien Howard retired. Ward and Jones are both expected to return to the field in the coming weeks, but the Colts have still been ravaged in the secondary.

While the Colts will be careful with the price of outside players, multiple reports confirm that the team is on the hunt for defensive help.

The Colts join the Baltimore Ravens, Detroit Lions, and Los Angeles Rams as teams "making calls for a corner," according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic.

Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports reports that the Colts "will take defensive help for the right price. Sources say the Colts have been looking for edge rush and secondary help."

Jordan Schultz of The Schultz Report adds that the Colts are "viewed around the league as a team to watch ahead of the trade deadline — with their focus on adding a proven defensive playmaker, per sources."

It's important to note that, although the Colts are interested in acquiring outside talent through trade, it's not always easy to pull off.

Players who do get traded are often in the final years of their contract, so acquiring teams can be wary of bringing in a player for half of a season, who may not re-sign with them. Teams willing to trade players away also often ask for too rich of a price for players, creating an impasse between the two sides.

The Colts know they have a rare opportunity as they sit atop the league's standings, but other teams have to be willing to play ball.
