On the latest episode of the Locked On Colts podcast on the Locked On Podcast Network, hosts Zach Hicks and Jake Arthur discuss the recent struggles of Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones, evaluate the playcalling and game management of head coach Shane Steichen from the overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, and give their thoughts on the new-look defense.
The Colts lost to the Chiefs last Sunday in overtime, 23-20. It was truly a tale of two halves. The Colts carried a 20-9 lead into the fourth quarter, with possession of the ball after a takeaway. However, Jones fell apart when asked to finish the job, leading the offense to three consecutive three-and-outs.
While the offense was falling apart, a gassed Colts defense allowed the Chiefs to mount a comeback, tying the game with a field goal as the clock expired and sending it to overtime.
The Colts had another three-and-out in overtime, as Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes got his team down the field for the game-winning field goal.
Zach and Jake discuss Jones' actual performance: the first three quarters, when he looked great, and what went wrong in the fourth quarter and overtime.
"I thought the margin of this game being completely handled by the Colts versus what actually happened, and them going with whatever plan of attack that was (in the fourth quarter), and Jones not responding well to it, it was really thin," Arthur said. "And it could have teetered either way there.
"But overall, those first three quarters, I thought it was a great response (for Jones) from what we'd seen over the last couple games. But then the fourth quarter, you have to be discouraged because of what you had seen earlier in the month."
Likewise, what role did Steichen play in the collapse, given that the Colts ran the ball just once in the fourth quarter with their lead, which took just three-plus minutes off the clock?
On the defensive side of the ball, it was the debut of the cornerback tandem of Sauce Gardner and Charvarius Ward Sr.
How did the defense perform under unideal circumstances, and how did coordinator Lou Anarumo call the game?
The Colts next host the Houston Texans at 1:00 p.m. E.T. on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium. The game can be viewed on CBS.
