The Indianapolis Colts have an uncomfortable situation looming over their quarterback room, and it has nothing to do with starter Daniel Jones' recovery from an Achilles injury.
This February, Anthony Richardson Sr. requested a trade from the team. The Colts agreed, but nothing reasonable enough has developed for them to make a move, so Richardson ultimately returned to the team during the offseason program.
From the Colts' perspective, anyone on the team will be given an opportunity to compete, so Richardson is in the running for the Colts' QB2 battle with Riley Leonard until something transpires with his situation.
However, Richardson, a former top-five draft pick, still has enough potential to entice a suiting team this summer.
Bleacher Report's Brad Gagnon made eight bold predictions for NFL training camps, and the Colts trading Richardson was among them.
"The Colts are now deeply committed to Daniel Jones financially, and Richardson likely remained on the roster through the heart of the offseason because Jones was still recovering from a torn Achilles," Gagnon wrote.
"Potential landing spots include the Cardinals. Especially if Jacoby Brissett's contract dispute boils over—the Jets, once they realize Geno Smith is not the guy, or the Steelers, Cowboys, or Panthers as a premium stash-away option for 2027."
Richardson's days as the planned starter are in the past since losing the QB1 job to Jones last training camp. However, Jones suffered his Achilles injury last year in Week 14 and was lost for the final four games, while Richardson had already suffered his own season-ending eye injury several weeks earlier, which eliminated his chances of proving himself or recapturing any magic.
The Colts have seen enough from Jones to invest in him, signing him to a two-year, $88 million deal this offseason, which could escalate up to $100 million.
With Richardson still being just 24 years old, he could still have a whole career ahead of him.
Remaining healthy and putting good tape out there during the Colts' three upcoming joint practices and preseason games could go a long way toward making a trade a reality.
“I’m not really focused on that right now," Richardson told reporters this offseason when asked if he still wanted to be traded.
"I’m here right now. I’m just trying to make sure I’m staying healthy and keeping everything up there in the mind sharp.”
