Indianapolis Colts backup quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. was charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession in Carmel, Ind., last week following an incident in which he received a citation on Mon., Oct. 12.
According to the police report, Richardson was pulled over by police driving a vehicle with expired registration, and was also registered to a different vehicle. The officer reportedly smelled the odor of marijuana, and Richardson admitted to smoking in the vehicle to avoid doing it in front of his children.
"Richardson then exited the vehicle and was placed in handcuffs as the officer searched his vehicle," according to FOX59/CBS4. "The officer reported finding a small mason jar containing a substance believed to be marijuana and an opened bag of THC-infused gummies."
Last week, the Colts provided a statement to ColtsRoundtable:
“We are aware of the situation involving Anthony Richardson and are currently gathering additional information. We will have no further comment at this time.”
After the news broke on the morning of Fri., Oct. 23, Richardson wasn't available for comment in the locker room at the team facility later that day, but he did speak to reporters in the locker room on the road at U.S. Bank Stadium, after the Colts' 16-10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.
According to James Boyd of The Athletic, Richardson said that his marijuana charge is an ongoing legal matter and he didn't speak much about it.
“I enjoy life. I don’t really regret a lot of things I do. I appreciate my life. I appreciate God waking me up every morning,” Richardson said, per Boyd, when asked if he regrets the incident.
"I know my character, God knows my character, my family knows me. So I don't need to explain anything else," Richardson said, per ESPN's Stephen Holder.
Richardson's citation follows Colts wide receiver Keenan Allen's August OWI arrest.
Any punishment the league hands down to Richardson will likely come at the end of his legal process, or if he publicly admits guilt.
Richardson is in the final year of his initial four-year rookie deal after being selected No. 4 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. The Colts fired general manager Chris Ballard last Monday, prompting heightened trade rumors about several players, including Richardson.
Although he was named the opening-day starter in each of his first two years, Richardson was officially replaced as the Colts' starting quarterback by Daniel Jones in 2025.
Richardson's 2025 season ended in Week 6 at the hands of a freak accident before the game when a bar that was supporting a resistance band broke off and struck him in the eye.
He faced competition for the Colts' backup quarterback role this summer from second-year player Riley Leonard, and Richardson was officially named QB2 before the regular season.
Richardson has made just two game appearances since the start of 2025.
In 17 career games (15 starts), Richardson is 177-of-350 passing (50.6%) for 2,400 yards (6.9 YPA), 11 touchdowns, and 17 turnovers (13 interceptions, 4 lost fumbles) for a passer rating of 67.8. He's also run the ball 115 times for 634 yards (5.5 avg.) and 10 touchdowns.
