The Washington Commanders scored 14 second half points to beat the Philadelphia Eagles, 24-17, to close the 2025 season.

The Big Doug and Carmi Show

The Washington Commanders ended the 2025 regular season the same way it started: with a win against a divisional opponent, this time a 24-17 win on the road against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Quarterback Josh Johnson finished with 14-for-22 for 131 yards and two total touchdowns and interception, along with 45 rushing yards one four carries.

The Commanders started on the right foot after holding the Eagles to a three-and-out on the opening possession, then following it up with a bold and extended opening series for the Commanders' offense after a 17 play drive drove the offense inside the Eagles' ten yard line. But it ended with no points after Jake Moody's 24 yard attempt hit the upright for his first miss since joining the Commanders.

Philadelphia would make Washington pay on the ensuing possession, turning a nine play drive into the first touchdown to open the scoring less than two minutes into the second quarter.

Washington answered with an eight-play touchdown drive made possible by a third down penalty against Eagles cornerback Jakorian Bennett, setting up Chris Rodriguez for the one-yard rushing touchdown.

In a season filled with miscues, the Washington defense would step up for a pair of stops on the last two drives of the first half after holding the Eagles on 4th-and-goal from the two-yard line, then registering a takeaway for cornerback Jeremy Reaves' first interception of the season to end an Eagles' scoring chance inside two minutes.

Washington would turn the late takeaway into points after a five-yard drive, highlighted by a 14-yard reception by Terry McLaurin then 11-yard scramble by Josh Johnson, set up Jake Moody for a 56-yard field goal attempt, giving the Commanders a 10-7 lead at halftime.

That would change after Josh Johnson watched the snap out of shotgun go through his hands to set Philadelphia up for a scoring opportunity outside of the redzone. The Eagles capitalized after Tank Bigbsy punched in a one-yard touchdown with Washington trailing, 14-10.

After the Eagles extended their lead to seven following a 39-yard field goal inside the final minute of the third quarter, Commanders QB Josh Johnson would lead the offense down the field once again after picking on Eagles CB Jakorian Bennett to set up goal-to go. The drive ended with tight end John Bates' first touchdown since week 11 of the 2022 season.

Josh Johnson would then give the Commanders the lead back on the ensuing possession after a quarterback keeper on a rollout on third down led to a walk in touchdown, his first rushing touchdown since 2018 against the New York Giants during his first stint with the organization.

The Eagles had a several opportunities in the fourth quarter, including one last possession inside the final minute after the Eagles held Washington to a three-and-out, but quarterback Tanner McKee couldn't do anything with it. Instead, it would be linebacker Von Miller to virtually end the game after a third down sack, hitting his contract incentive on the second-to-last play of the 2025 regular season.

Terry McLaurin became the fifth player in franchise history to eclipse 1,000 career receiving yards against the Eagles after recording a 25-yard catch in the opening minutes of the second quarter.
