The Washington Commanders are set to shift to preseason on Wednesday as we dive into the latest notes, including injury updates and new roster moves
The Washington Commanders took the field on Tuesday morning for the final practice of training camp before preseason begins on Wednesday with a joint practice against the Miami Dolphins, followed by the first preseason game this upcoming Friday, Aug. 14.
Injury Updates on Allegretti, Amos
The Commanders won't have either center Nick Allegretti or cornerback Trey Amos in attendance for Wednesday's joint practice followed by the preseason game vs. Miami, but both were spotted working off on a side field during Tuesday's practice as they inch closer toward full strength.
Head coach Dan Quinn noted the team is "still assessing" the status of Amos after suffering an ankle injury in his second practice back, though a return for Allegretti should materialize sooner after Quinn noted he expects the center to "hopefully" return on Sunday, Aug. 16.
Washington has worked to restock the depth at center after signing a pair of free agents in Daniel Brunskill and Trey Hill, while Julian Good-Jones has remained ahead of Matt Gulbin through offseason workouts.
Light Day on Tuesday with Several Not Practicing
Ahead of the joint practice, Dan Quinn noted that Tuesday's practice would be a light day with the team out of pads and focusing once again on redzone drills. Yet that was also met with several players sidelined ahead of Wednesday's joint practice.
Veteran wide receivers Terry McLaurin and Stefon Diggs, offensive lineman Sam Cosmi and Chris Paul, outside linebackers Odafe Oweh and K'Lavon Chaisson, cornerback Amik Robertson, safety Jeremy Reaves, tight end Ben Sinnott along with defensive linemen Javon Kinlaw and Daron Payne were not spotted during Tuesday's practice. With a long day scheduled for Wednesday and the team out of pads on Tuesday, the group will likely return when the Dolphins arrive.
Signing Made Official
Roughly 12 hours after news of the free agent signing broke, the Washington Commanders officially announced the addition of defensive tackle Byron Cowart ahead of Tuesday's practice, stockpile more depth in the trenches.
Washington also announced a pair of departures after releasing two players: guard Sala Aumavae-Laulu and safety Rob McDaniel.
Aumavae-Laulu, 27, was among the players who signed to the practice squad at the end of the 2025 season before inking a reserve/futures contract at the start of 2026. A former sixth round pick by the Baltimore Ravens in 2023, he has yet to make his NFL debut through three seasons. McDaniel was signed by Washington in April 2025 before inking to the practice squad ahead of last season, then joining Aumavae-Laulu to sign a futures contract for the upcoming season.
