The Washington Commanders added three offensive linemen on Saturday while head coach Dan Quinn offered an update on starting center Nick Allegretti and tight end John Bates
The Washington Commanders are adding additional depth to the preseason roster after announcing a flurry of moves ahead of Saturday's practice.
In addition to veteran offensive lineman Max Scharping, the Commanders also announced the addition of center Daniel Brunskill and offensive tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere.
Washington also announced that undrafted wide receiver Chris Hilton Jr. and offensive guard Timothy McKay were both released, while defensive tackle DJ Davidson was placed on the reserve/ retired list.
In addition, head coach Dan Quinn noted that it will be "another week or so" until the team gets a better assessment on both center Nick Allegretti and tight end John Bates. Quinn reiterated that there is no long-term concern with either player after Allegretti went down with a strained calf in the first practice of training camp while Bates suffered a strained hamstring during the opening week.
Brunskill, 32, began his NFL career as an undrafted rookie with the Atlanta Falcons in 2017 during Dan Quinn's time as head coach of the organization. He spent two seasons on the team's practice squad before suiting up for the San Diego Fleet in the AAF in 2019, then appearing in 14 games and starting in seven for the San Francisco 49ers back in 2019. He then started in 16 games for San Francisco in 2020 when Adam Peters was with the organization before remaining a fixture in the trenches through the 2022 season. He added to his profile as a versatile lineman after inking a two year deal with the Tennessee Titans ahead of 2023 where he played both guard and center. His most recent stint was with the Miami Dolphins last season where he started in five games and appeared in 16 games.
Petit-Frere, 26, heads to Washington after struggling during his three seasons with the Tennessee Titans. A former third round pick out of Ohio State in 2022, he spent time on the 49ers' practice squad in 2025 while he was also suspended for six games in 2023 after violating the NFL's gambling policy.
The addition of Brunskill and Petit-Frere alongside Scharping stockpiles additional depth to the unit, while adding two pieces who add center experience to the roster given the growing concern about Allegretti's extended absence that will now spill into preseason.
Davidson becomes already the third player to retire from the team this offseason, joining linebacker Nick Bellore and cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon.
