Head coach Dan Quinn offered updates on a pair of injured defenders, while the Washington Commanders made several roster moves on Wednesday morning

The first practice of training camp has arrived for the Washington Commanders as head coach Dan Quinn noted Wednesday will be broken into six blocks with red zone part of the day one focus. Yet day one also came with additional injury updates and roster moves.

Defensive ends Dorance Armstrong and Deatrich Wise Jr. will also work off to the side to begin training camp. Both were placed on the physically unable to perform list ahead of training camp, alongside cornerback Trey Amos, as Armstrong recovers from the season-ending knee injury that derailed his 2025 season after just five games. Wise, meanwhile, is back on a one-year deal looking to make his impact felt after he suffered a quad injury in the week two road loss against the Green Bay Packers that also shut down the remainder of his season.

While an exact timeline to return remains unclear both, Quinn offered optimism on Armstrong after noting he is "super close" to being activated off the PUP list as he looks to make his return ahead of the 2026 regular season.

The Commanders also made additional roster moves on Wednesday morning, in addition to finalizing the signing of punter Matt Haack following Tress Way's minor injury ahead of training camp. Wide receiver River Cracraft is back with the organization after he spent time on the practice squad during the 2025 season. The 6-foot undrafted rookie out of Washington State previously had stints with the Denver Broncos, Philadelphia Eagles, San Francisco 49ers and Miami Dolphins prior to heading to Washington.

Washington also announced that cornerback Fred Davis II has been activated off the active/non-football illness list. The 6-foot-1 cornerback will look to make an impression in his first NFL snaps after becoming an undrafted free agent following the 2026 NFL Draft.

Two departures were made official with both outside linebacker Andre Carter and tight end Anthony Firkser released. Firkser signed with Washington in early June, while Carter was a practice squad candidate after arriving in mid-January on a futures contract. Carter has spent the bulk of his NFL career on practice squad after becoming an undrafted free agent in 2023.

Meanwhile, Dan Quinn pointed to running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt as one who has added seven to eight pounds of muscle during the offseason with all the focus on whether he can make an impact in the pass game, both as a receiving and blocking back.
