General manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn spoke on three injuries that the Washington Commanders are working through to begin training camp
Ahead of the start of training camp on Wednesday, the Washington Commanders made another roster move just prior to head coach Dan Quinn revealing two players will be sidelined for the opening practice, while offering an update on a key piece in the secondary.
Punter Tress Way is battling through a pectoral injury as general manager Adam Peters noted on Tuesday evening that the veteran will be training "off to the side." The injury is not expected to sideline Way for an extended period as Peters noted he's "not too worried about that."
Linebacker Kain Medrano will also be sidelined due to a hamstring injury that was suffered in training during the offseason, but like Way, Adam Peters noted that he is expected to "be back shortly."
Peters added that cornerback Trey Amos, who was one of three players to be placed on the PUP list over the weekend, should also be back "pretty soon" after battling through soft tissue soreness through the offseason. Amos enters 2026 as a key part of Washington's cornerback room after the Ole Miss product flashed through the first ten games of his rookie season. Washington signed veteran Rasul Douglas to elevate the depth in the cornerback room as his roster addition was made official on Monday.
With Way now absent, the Commanders made a move to fill the immediate vacancy after the agent of longtime NFL punter Matt Haack announced his signing with the Commanders.
An undrafted free agent out of Arizona State from the 2017 NFL Draft, Haack spent his first four seasons of his NFL career with the Miami Dolphins before stints with the Buffalo Bills, Indianapolis Colts, Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns, Buffalo Bills, New York Giants and Jacksonville Jaguars. In 2025, Haack began the season on the practice squad of the Denver Broncos before heading to the Arizona Cardinals in November where he appeared in seven games.
Through his nine seasons and 110 games in the NFL, Haack owns a 45 yard punt average and a 39.9 yard net punt with 179 punts pinned inside the 20 and 26 touchbacks.
How much he's able to capitalize on the opportunity will be a question for the ensuing weeks to answer given the lack of any question about the long-term status at the position.
Way was the first player to re-sign with the organization this offseason as general manager Adam Peters began sifting through the over 30 departing free agents, yet electing to bring back the franchise's longest-tenured player back first.
