The Washington Commanders are adding experienced depth to the secondary after inking veteran Rasul Douglas

The Washington Commanders are adding experience to the secondary after inking a veteran free agent cornerback on Monday.

Longtime NFL cornerback Rasul Douglas is signing with the Commanders on a one year deal worth up to $3.8 million, per multiple reports.

Douglas, who will turn 31 ahead of the 2026 regular season, arrives after spending the 2025 season with the Miami Dolphins. Douglas, a former third round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, also had stints with the Philadelphia Eagles, Carolina Panthers, Green Bay Packers and Buffalo Bills among others during his eight year NFL career.

Washington previously inked former Indianapolis Colts safety Nick Cross to a two year deal where the DMV native is expected to become an impact piece in the 2026 defense, but the cornerback room was as big of a focus.

Washington has a pair of veterans in Akhello Witherspoon and Amik Robertson already signed to pair with Mike Sainristil and Trey Amos as Amos recovers from his season-ending injury, but Douglas could solidify the rotation after prioritizing speed and depth in the front seven. With uncertainty as to when Amos could return to full strength, Douglas gives the Commanders a short-term solution.

Veteran Rasul Douglas hasn't always been consistent in his career, but the 30 year old proved to be a big piece of the Dolphins' secondary where he posted 13 pass deflections and a pair of interceptions in 13 starts and 15 appearances in 2025. Douglas also allowed just a 54.5% completion percentage and allowed three touchdowns on 77 targets.

Over his career, Douglas has also recorded 19 interceptions while allowing a 61.5% completion rate. The veteran also adds versatility in the room as capable of playing both sides of the field.

The latest free agent signing also comes after Washington was linked to cornerbacks ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft, though assistant general manager Lance Newmark noted the lack of selections in the cornerback room was not for a lack of interest. With uncertainty as to what the outlook for the Commanders' cornerbacks and depth in 2026, Douglas becomes a key part of the solution under new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones.

Washington will now look to integrate the longtime NFL cornerback into a secondary that will be heavily tested through the first two weeks of the season with Devonta Smith, Makai Lemon, CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens all on the schedule to begin year three of the Dan Quinn era.
