After months of back and forth, the Washington Commanders are viewed to be "intriguing" to veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs
The Washington Commanders will kick off training camp this week with a chance for the wide receiver room to provide much-needed clarity to the quality of the depth and talent available to quarterback Jayden Daniels in 2026. Yet just like there has been all season, the Commanders were once again in the headlines for an available wide receiver with the attention on the available veteran free agents set to pick up through training camp.
Veteran Stefon Diggs has drawn interest around the NFL after reports of roughly five teams expressing interest in the Maryland native. The Commanders were also specifically mentioned as a team that is "intriguing" to Diggs, who also believe he can be a quality WR2 for a top quarterback. While Jayden Daniels fits that profile, it also reinforces Diggs' previous statement about how many WR2s across the NFL are currently better than the veteran.
The 33 year old has posted at least 1,000 receiving yards in seven of his last eight seasons with the exception being the 2024 season that was cut short due to a torn ACL suffered in week eight. Diggs is also coming off his first Super Bowl appearance with the New England Patriots, while he was also cleared of his NFL investigation after he was found not guilty from his legal matters this summer.
Washington has shown signs of both being content while also evaluating the market with veteran Keenan Allen among the veterans also drawing interest from the front office. Meanwhile, Brandon Aiyuk -- who is not on San Francisco's 90-man roster -- was a one-time obvious offseason acquisition candidate before his social media antics became a continued storyline that cast doubt on a pairing.
Commanders veteran wideout Terry McLaurin is confident that someone "will step up" alongside him in the wide receiver room, yet how confident the coaching staff is and whether Washington ultimately signs a wide receiver is a question that will be answered starting in training camp into the preseason slate. Rookie wide receiver Antonio Williams has the makings of breakout potential while tight end Chig Okonkwo is expected to alleviate the strain on the wide receivers, but who under position coach Bobby Engram will step up?
With Diggs more likely to sign following training camp like the rest of the veterans, time will tell if a hometown reunion will end up materializing after months of Washington being viewed as the ideal fit for the former fifth round pick. Until then, offensive coordinator David Blough will look to iron out the kinks of his first-year offense.
