The Washington Commanders have been linked to San Francisco wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk all offseason, but is it still worth it?
When it comes to the current players, the headlines have been minimal at best for the Washington Commanders. A few have found themselves in the news for good reasons like second year offensive tackle Josh Conerly among the players to host a camp in his hometown, but it's largely been a quiet offseason. As for players who want to be in Washington, that remains a separate story.
Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has, once again, been a mainstay on social media. A handful of consecutive quiet days led to a level of optimism about whether the San Francisco wideout would opt for a different path to resolve the year-long messy divorce. Yet that would once again change.
Aiyuk posted a lengthy message on Tuesday explaining why he will "not be reinstating with [San Francisco] nor ever doing any kind of business with them." Though a return to the Niners organization isn't necessarily contingent for Aiyuk to be officially reinstated, the ongoing noise without lack of true developments in his situation -- aside from officially parting with his agent -- has made this a head case.
That doesn't even account for Aiyuk continuing to include Jayden Daniels by name in multiple Instagram posts, Aiyuk calling out Daniels after a fan cursed about the receiver to the Commanders' quarterback at a World Cup game, or whether Daniels' mom reposting the negative publicity on X/Twitter represents an actual rift between the former college teammates. Maybe his last post on Wednesday said it all after admitting that even if he signs with a new NFL team for the upcoming 2026 season, he's "still going to be on his [expletive] on social media."
For a team led by head coach Dan Quinn that has made clear that distractions are to be at a minimum with maximum effort through offseason workouts, it's fair to question whether Aiyuk would be a fit in the Commanders' locker room now. For a team preparing for a pivotal year three for both Quinn and Daniels after a tale of two seasons, the Aiyuk saga has become apparent it's a problem waiting to happen. Add in the questions about whether Aiyuk is even physically ready to return to an NFL practice, much less a game, it becomes a puzzle piece that might not fight in Washington anymore.
While Aiyuk's social media antics continued through the week, Daniels was spotted working out with several Commanders wide receivers and tight ends on Thursday.
Washington needs production to add to what can easily be viewed as the biggest concern along the roster, but Aiyuk is becoming increasingly apparent he's not the answer. Could a pivot from Aiyuk lead to a changed perception of the situation? Sure, but Aiyuk himself said he doesn't plan to change his antics if he latches on in Washington in 2026.
As for if Washington pivots, whether others like Stefon Diggs, maybe Deandre Hopkins or a rotational piece like Sterling Shepard become names more frequently linked to Washington to round out the rotation will be a question for August to answer.
