The Washington Commanders made two roster moves official as several returned to practice after battling injuries through training camp
After head coach Dan Quinn and general manager Adam Peters took the podium on Monday, the Washington Commanders made another round of roster moves official.
The Commanders officially announced that both left tackle Laremy Tunsil and defensive tackle Johnny Newton have been placed on the reserve/ injured list, an expected move given the long-term concern with both.
Tunsil tore his tricep in one-on-ones against edge rusher Odafe Oweh during workouts, sidelining him for a "significant" portion of the upcoming 2026 regular season to deal a massive blow to the offensive line. The news came one day after the team officially announced the signing of veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs, dealing a blow to the elevated preseason expectations surrounding the Commanders.
Newton suffered a torn pectoral muscle during preseason as head coach Dan Quinn previously noted he is expected to miss significant time after undergoing surgery in New York. The move marks a blow to the depth for an arguably already thin rotation, but Monday's official injury designations also allowed the Commanders to bring back two more familiar pieces.
Nose tackle Shy Tuttle and cornerback Fabian Moreau are both re-joining the team, one day after both were among the final batch of roster cuts though both were expected to return to the organization. Tuttle drew praise from head coach Dan Quinn during the preseason where his arrival alleviates concerns along the defensive line that also saw veteran Daron Payne return to practice.
Moreau, meanwhile, re-joins the Commanders with a chance to also alleviate depth concerns at a position that became increasingly under the microscope through August. The absence of cornerback Trey Amos for at least the first four games of the regular season magnified the need to address depth with Dan Quinn crediting Moreau for living up to expectations after signing in early August, filling the void left by Ahkello Witherspoon's abrupt retirement.
While the Commanders tweak the roster, Dan Quinn confirmed the availability of several for Monday's practice with center Nick Allegretti, quarterback Marcus Mariota, defensive lineman Daron Payne, linebacker Jordan Magee and tight end Ben Sinnott all back on the field. While the return of each player was expected to materialize prior to the regular season opener, Allegretti snapping to quarterback Jayden Daniels is a welcomed sight after missing the overwhelming majority of training camp with a calf injury. Now, the question becomes whether he can live up to the consistent confidence that both Quinn and general manager Adam Peters have delivered nearly all offseason.
