The Washington Commanders are adding depth to the interior offensive line.
Reports broke on Wednesday morning that the Commanders are signing offensive lineman Lucas Patrick to the active 53-man roster, giving the unit experienced depth at a position of need.
News broke one day prior to his signing that Patrick, 33, was on a visit with the Washington Commanders as the veteran loomed large as a potential addition to bolster a weakness.
Patrick also arrives with experience at key position of need for Washington -- guard and center. He owns over 2,000 snaps across the three interior line spots and allowed nine sacks through his first eight NFL seasons.
After becoming an undrafted free agent following the 2016 NFL Draft, Patrick spent his first five seasons with the Green Bay Packers where he played both guard and center across 34 starts and 73 total appearances, including starts in 28 of his final 33 appearances with the organization.
Patrick then made the move within the division to sign with the Chicago Bears for two seasons beginning in 2022 where he started in 20 games and appeared in 23 total. He then spent the 2024 season with the New Orleans Saints where he started in ten games and appeared in 11 before then inking with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2025 where he started in one game and appeared in six. Patrick then made the move back to the NFC after inking with John Harbaugh and the New York Giants back in April 2026, but after battling a knee injury through the preseason, the veteran was released just prior to the start of the regular season.
While Tuesday's visit gave the front office a chance to evaluate his health in addition to bringing in multiple players for workouts, the veteran arrives in Ashburn giving the Commanders experience at key positions. Though he played right guard at times during his stint with the Packers, whether the Commanders stick with Chris Paul as the starting left guard through the season is a question that will have to be answered in 2026 after the former seventh round pick was under the microscope. Yet the center experience also looms large given the Commanders have turned to Nick Allegretti as the starting center for the first time in his NFL career, though lack quality or experienced depth behind him. Sixth-round pick Matt Gublin currently serves as Allegretti's primary backup while Julian Good-Jones, who was under the microscope all offseason, was elevated from the practice squad for the regular season opener loss against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Patrick and the Commanders will now look to get in the win column when they stay on the road to face the Dallas Cowboys this Sunday, Sept. 20. Kickoff is set for 4:25 PM on FOX.
