The Washington Commanders have nearly another month until training camp kicks off as they avoid the lull period
The Washington Commanders have officially wrapped up minicamp and with one last break in the offseason, details for the next phase of the offseason were officially announced by the NFL on Monday.
The Washington Commanders will kick off practice on Wednesday, July 29th with rookies set to report on Friday, July 24th then veterans the following Tuesday, July 28.
The league also announced the joint practices across the league with the Commanders set for two, first with the Miami Dolphins in Ashburn, Va. on August 12 followed by the Baltimore Ravens in Owings Mills, Md. on August 26 ahead of the scheduled preseason games. Details from the Commanders' organization for fans on dates to attend has yet to formally be released, though the latest announcement adds an end in sight with mandatory minicamp wrapped up last week.
Washington's preseason slate was finalized when the week two details for the road game against the Detroit Lions were announced with the road game set to kick off at 12 PM EST on Saturday, August 22. It will mark an intriguing matchup for Washington given it marks the other NFC team who showed interest in David Blough in their one-time vacant offensive coordinator search that ended with former Arizona coordinator Drew Petzing making the move to Detroit. As for Washington, it was the outside interest that vaulted the Commanders to fill the first of two coordinator vacancies heading into Dan Quinn's third season with the organization.
Preseason will give a chance for both new coordinators to finalize the kinks of the offseason install ahead of a pivotal season. Head coach Dan Quinn noting through minicamp and OTAs that while the team may not practice every package during the summer, the chance to pick up on installs through team and position meetings to jumpstart the preseason prep looms large. Until then, the Commanders are looking to avoid the lull, as head coach Dan Quinn called it.
"They've got some real principles to lean back on, their teammates, the way we want to compete, the standards that we have," Quinn said to close out minicamp on Thursday.
Essentially, stay fresh to give the team a chance to build on the offseason momentum to open what's hoped to be a bounceback season on the right foot.
Yet for a Commanders team that made strides with roughly 80% of the offense installed as the defense drew rave reviews over the last month, head coach Dan Quinn admitted confidence in "the gains that [the team] made this offseason."
The next part will be building on the foundation, but there likely will be an opportunity for a handful of players to reconnect over the next month. Whether that materializes in the trenches like Laremy Tunsil did when he took several of the offensive linemen down in Alabama earlier this offseason, or quarterback Jayden Daniels hosting the wide receivers for another workout, that remains the part fans look ahead to hearing about over the next month.
For Quinn and the coaching staff, it's the necessary part for a Commanders team that is looking to "set out with big sights on what we could accomplish together" during the 2026 regular season.
