After going down midway through his rookie season, could Washington Commanders cornerback Trey Amos be the breakout candidate in 2026?
The Washington Commanders will lean on a blend of new and familiar faces to piece together what is hoped to be a bounceback 2026 season as head coach Dan Quinn looks for sustained success.
While quarterback Jayden Daniels remains the focal point of the offseason, general manager Adam Peters and the front office prioritized the defensive upgrades in both free agency and the 2026 NFL Draft with the front seven getting the vastly improved upgrades that it needed whether it be in starting roles or rounding out a positional rotation.
Yet while both first and last free agent signing materialized in the cornerback room with Amik Robertson and Akhello Witherspoon inking with the organization, many have pointed to the secondary as a question mark with possible upgrades like Rasul Douglas still available in free agency. Witherspoon could round out the cornerback rotation alongside Antonio Hamilton, who re-signed with the organization last week, while Robertson could step into either an outside role or nickel with the latter the one many have viewed him to be capable of upgrading in 2026.
With Mike Sainristil looking to return to 2024 form, Trey Amos is also looking to bounce back after watching his rookie season cut short due to injury. With optimism in the Ole Miss product within the fanbase, PFF pointed to Amos as Washington's breakout player ahead of the 2026 season.
"While Amos was certainly victimized at times, he reflected his talent by earning at least a 68.5 coverage grade in five of his ten contests, and his 51.43% lockdown rate was 26th among all cornerbacks," Bradley Locker of PFF wrote.
Amos also broke up a staggering 17.6% of his targets while allowing just one touchdown on 38 targets, yet the athletic outside cornerback quickly became an integral part of the rotation after starting in all but two of his ten appearances.
Whether Washington's decision to prioritize adding speed and depth to its front seven is enough for a secondary looking to thrive in more zone than man under new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones will be tested, and tested early.
The Commanders will gameplan to stop Jaxon Smith-Njigba, DeVonta Smith, Ceedee Lamb and George Pickens all within the first three weeks of the season. Amos will be a big part of that solution with a chance to test the bold preseason pick early.
