The final break of the offseason has arrived as we break down three lingering questions for the Washington Commanders after minicamp

The final lull of the offseason has arrived for the Washington Commanders with mandatory minicamp complete and now weeks until training camp officially begins. While there was plenty to learn over the last month, we dive into three questions still lingering heading into July, starting on offense as always:

Is the current room of skill players enough for Jayden Daniels?

It's been the question that has been dissected seemingly each week of the offseason with all the questions about whether the Commanders have enough currently in the room. Head coach Dan Quinn pointed to free agent signings Van Jefferson and Dyami Brown as two who caught his eye early in minicamp, while rookie Antonio Williams was spotted working off on the side at the start of the week.

Yet the results didn't match the words after the wide receivers struggled with drops through the week, adding credence to the question. Washington has a major void at WR2 with the initial hope that Treylon Burks could emerge with a chance to step into an elevated role, but that may be more aspiration than reality as things stand. Could Van Jefferson be the one to outperform preseason expectations and shoulder a bigger share of the targets?

Big picture, this was the last stretch for Washington to evaluate its full roster. Sure, the chance to gauge the depth across the board is a smart takeaway after the Commanders struggled with depth at several positions in 2025, but the front office now has a decision to make whether what's currently in the building is enough. With veterans beginning to eye landing spots as training camp approaches, Washington has a decision to make if they want to still be active in the open market.

Does Brandon Coleman re-emerge along starting OL?

The Commanders welcome ample continuity along the offensive line in 2026 with bookend tackles Josh Conerly leaning on veteran Laremy Tunsil ahead of his second season. Nick Allegretti has shown all the signs of taking over the starting center job with preseason a chance for him and Matt Gulbin to add confidence to the rotation, but maybe the biggest question heading into July is if a change does materialize at left guard.

Brandon Coleman was demoted in favor of Chris Paul at left guard just two weeks into the 2025 season, and while it appeared Paul would depart in free agency, that didn't materialize after the former seventh-round pick inked a one-year deal. After a strong season, there's a chance for Paul to build on that success and become a multi-year starter, but Coleman will have a chance to shake that up.

While head coach Dan Quinn cautioned that roughly 80% of the offense has been installed so far, the Commanders are expected to feature more zone blocking under Blough, which could favor Coleman's strengths better than Paul. Quinn also noted that while Coleman has versatility along the offensive line, he'll stick at left guard where he and Paul will get a chance to compete through training camp into preseason. Evaluating the experience depth is a good problem to have for Washington, but who shakes out is its own question mark.

Kicker Competition

One of the underrated storylines heading into preseason will be how the specialists shake out. Washington quickly quieted concerns about a kicker vacancy after re-signing Jake Moody hours after electing not to tender him, but he'll have competition ahead of a potential first full season with the organization.

The arrival of former Iowa kicker Drew Stevens has added intrigue around the competition having, at times, outperformed Moody in kicking drills. While Moody made four of his six attempts on day one of minicamp, Stevens drilled all six of his attempts with both hitting from 54 yards out.

Special teams coordinator Larry Izzo has been transparent that the competition will come down to who consistently makes kicks with this expected to remain an unanswered question until preseason. Stevens may have some accuracy concerns to overcome from his college days, but his leg up on power could make this more of a true battle than expected.
