While the Washington Commanders are ignoring the noise, head coach Dan Quinn points to two wide receivers who caught his eye
The Washington Commanders have made clear that they're focused on themselves, whether it relates to players interested in heading to Washington or other moves around the league. It's been that way for some time, too.
Months after general manager Adam Peters deflected comments when asked about San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk at the NFL scouting combine, head coach Dan Quinn did the same to close out OTAs.
"Not for my understanding or do I have a comment about that," Quinn told local media. "You had to take a shot, I understand."
Quarterback Jayden Daniels, the source of Aiyuk's interest in heading to DC, also deflected after noting the personal friendship while adding, "his football future, that's out of my control."
It isn't a new saga for Washington given Aiyuk has been rumored to favor the Commanders all offseason after missing the entire 2025 season and being away from the 49ers. The question has always been when it could happen, even if it appears Aiyuk is trying to speed up the process by calling out the 49ers and leaving cryptic messages about his interest in becoming a Commander, all on social media.
While Tuesday's post of him on a scale weighing 208 pounds offered some sort of optimism on his availability, Aiyuk will have to prove his game shape once he does eventually return, yet the continued saga adds to the storylines ahead of the week six primetime matchup.
Of course, he isn't the only wide receiver not on the roster that the Commanders have been linked to given veteran Stefon Diggs found himself officially cleared by the NFL after being found not guilty in his court case. That's led the DMV native to remain a hopeful acquisition among Commander fans while he noted "it's a lot of hopes" in an interview over the weekend.
While both sagas could drag through the rest of the summer, the Commanders are utilizing all the time available to them as head coach Dan Quinn reiterated his team will use all three days available for mandatory minicamp. With Terry McLaurin a known commodity and expected emphasized piece in the passing attack, head coach Dan Quinn pointed to veteran free agent signing Van Jefferson as "somebody that has really caught my eye" with his route running and ability to pick up first downs making him a potential underrated addition.
While Van Jefferson pointed to his presence as a veteran leader in the room, Quinn also noted Jaylin Lane and Luke McCaffrey are "making their jumps" into year two and three, though the return of Dyami Brown adds established chemistry as Quinn noted he has a "good intensity about him" after day one of minicamp. Meanwhile, Treylon Burks will look to capitalize on a potential impact role with the starting role opposite of McLaurin a battle to watch into preseason.
With two more days for the team to create separation, Quinn knows what he wants to see from his pass catchers through the week.
"Their ability to get in and out of plays quickly. I think that's what disguise looks like, how can they change a play and get into the next one to give us the best advantage on a particular play. I would say recognition and knowing there's a couple of plays that they could have as their menu. They might have three different plays in their pocket going to the line of scrimmage and so the ability to get in and out of those takes a lot of discipline."
